Certified Slovak Document Translation

Slovakia operates a state-regulated sworn translator system under Act No. 382/2004 Z.z. o znalcoch, tlmočníkoch a prekladateľoch (on experts, interpreters, and translators), which entered into force on 1 September 2004. Translators who wish to produce legally binding translations for use before Slovak courts, administrative authorities, and the matričné úrady must be registered as úradní prekladatelia (official translators) in the list maintained by the Ministerstvo spravodlivosti Slovenskej republiky (Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic). The registration process requires candidates to demonstrate advanced linguistic competence, relevant education, professional experience, and personal reliability. Candidates must pass a specialized examination before being entered into the official register.

Once registered, sworn translators receive an official round stamp (okrúhla pečiatka) and are authorized to produce úradné preklady (official/sworn translations). A distinctive feature of the Slovak system is the binding requirement: the sworn translation must be physically bound to the original document — or a notarized copy — using a tricolour string (trikolóra) in the Slovak national colours (white, blue, red). This binding ensures that the translation cannot be separated from its source document, preventing tampering and establishing a clear chain of authenticity. The bound package is then sealed with the translator's stamp across the binding.

For documents intended for use outside Slovakia — such as immigration applications to the United States, Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom — DoVisa's certified translations are widely accepted without the need for an Slovak sworn translator's stamp. International authorities including USCIS, IRCC, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs accept certified translations with a translator's signed certification statement. Slovakia has been a Contracting Party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 18 February 2002, when the Convention entered into force following Slovakia's accession deposited on 6 June 2001. The Convention simplifies the authentication of public documents for international use by replacing the traditional consular legalization chain with a single apostille certificate. Slovakia designates multiple competent authorities for issuing apostilles depending on the document type and issuing institution, reflecting the distributed nature of the Slovak administrative system.

The principal competent authorities are: Krajské súdy (Regional Courts) for documents issued or certified by Okresné súdy (District Courts), notaries, súdni exekútori (bailiffs), and translations by registered úradní prekladatelia; the Ministerstvo spravodlivosti (Ministry of Justice) for documents from judicial authorities other than District Courts; the Ministerstvo vnútra (Ministry of Interior) for civil registry documents and documents from authorities under its jurisdiction; the Ministerstvo školstva (Ministry of Education) for educational documents; and the Ministerstvo zahraničných vecí a európskych záležitostí (Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs) for any other public documents not covered by the above authorities. The standard apostille fee is 10 EUR per document, except at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the fee is 20 EUR.
