The Czech Republic operates a rigorous court-appointed translator system governed by Act No. 354/2019 Coll., on Court Experts, Court Interpreters and Court Translators (zákon č. 354/2019 Sb., o znalcích, znaleckých kancelářích, znaleckých ústavech a o soudních tlumočnících). This legislation, which replaced the earlier Act No. 36/1967 Coll., establishes that only translators officially appointed by the Ministerstvo spravedlnosti (Ministry of Justice) and entered on the official register may produce legally binding translations (úřední překlady) for official use within the Czech Republic.
The appointment process requires candidates to demonstrate advanced linguistic competence, pass an entrance examination covering legal and administrative terminology, and take a formal oath. Once appointed, soudní tlumočníci receive an official round seal (úřední razítko) bearing their name, language combination, and registration number. Every sworn translation must include the translator's seal, handwritten signature, and a formal certification clause (doložka) attesting to the completeness and accuracy of the translation. The translation is physically bound together with a copy of the source document using an official binding cord and seal.
The register of court-appointed translators is maintained by the Ministry of Justice and is publicly accessible through the Ministry's online database. The Komora soudních tlumočníků České republiky (Chamber of Court Appointed Interpreters and Translators of the Czech Republic — KST ČR) serves as the voluntary professional organization representing and supporting court-appointed translators across the country. For documents destined for Czech domestic authorities — courts, civil registry offices (matriční úřady), the Ministry of the Interior's OAMP department — only sworn translations carry legal validity. For international use at USCIS, UK Home Office, IRCC, or credential evaluation agencies, DoVisa's certified translations meet all acceptance requirements without the sworn translator designation.
