What Is the Kenya ETA?

The Kenya ETA is the Republic of Kenya’s official Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) that travelers must obtain before the start of their journey. It is operated by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, through the Directorate of Immigration Services. Kenya’s immigration authority directs applicants to use the official portal at etakenya.go.ke to submit their application online.

You can apply directly on the government portal or use DoVisa for guided completion and document checks. The official “How to apply” flow requires a valid passport (at least 6 months validity) plus a selfie or passport-type photo and contact/travel details. After submission, you receive an electronic authorization/confirmation (typically delivered by email) to keep available for airline checks and for inspection on arrival. The Directorate of Immigration Services also posts operational guidance and service notes on its official page at immigration.go.ke/eta, including that applications are processed within stated working-day timelines.

Although many travelers refer to it as an “online visa,” the Kenya ETA is formally a travel authorization used for pre-screening and permission to board and present yourself for entry. It does not override border officer discretion, and it does not replace other entry conditions such as passport validity or any required health documentation. Recent policy guidance published by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that from 1 July 2025, Singapore passport holders are exempt from obtaining an eTA for visits not exceeding 90 days, and that passengers only transiting through Kenya are also exempt (always re-check current rules before travel).

For a broader view of entry rules and related documents, see Kenya visa information and confirm the latest notices on the official eTA portal. When you’re ready, Apply for your Kenya ETA now.

  • Passengers in transit who leave the airport/seaport transit area and enter Kenya

  • Transit passengers who remain in transit (do not clear immigration), as referenced in official travel guidance
  • Singapore passport holders for visits not exceeding 90 days (effective 1 July 2025, per Singapore MFA guidance)
  • Holders of Kenyan residence status documents (e.g., permanent residence certificate, valid work permit, or valid passes endorsed in the passport, as commonly listed by Kenya missions)

Restricted/prohibited imports can include arms/ammunition and explosives, and protected/regulated items (e.g., historical artifacts and ivory). See trade.gov guidance and follow Kenyan border instructions.

Travel Tips for Kenya Visitors

Kenya combines big-city energy in Nairobi with world-class wildlife reserves and Indian Ocean beaches. Plan your entry steps early, because carriers may check your authorization before boarding and immigration may scan your confirmation on arrival.

  • Currency: Kenyan Shilling (KES). USD may be accepted by some safari operators and hotels, but carry KES for day-to-day payments and tips.
  • Language: Swahili and English are official; English is widely used in airports, hotels, and national parks.
  • Time zone: East Africa Time (GMT+3), no daylight saving—use it when entering flight times and arrival dates.
  • Keep documents handy: Save your authorization email offline and carry your passport; airlines can request proof at check-in and border officers may ask to see it.
  • Security awareness: Follow official travel advisories and avoid traveling after dark outside main tourist corridors; use reputable taxis and pre-arranged transfers.
  • Wildlife rules: On safari, stay inside the vehicle unless a guide instructs otherwise, and keep a respectful distance from animals.
  • Coast logistics: For Mombasa and the coastal resorts, book transfers in advance and keep your accommodation address accessible for arrival formalities.
  • Respect local laws: Avoid buying wildlife products and be cautious about photographing sensitive sites—some advisories note restrictions around strategic buildings.
