Serbia operates a court-regulated sworn translator system under the Pravilnik o stalnim sudskim tumačima (Rules on Permanent Court Interpreters, Službeni glasnik RS 94/06, 106/06). Translators who wish to produce legally binding translations for use before Serbian courts and authorities must be appointed as stalni sudski tumači (permanent court interpreters) or stalni sudski prevodioci (permanent court translators) by the Ministar pravde (Minister of Justice). The appointment process is initiated through proposals from the presidents of viši sudovi (higher courts) who identify a need for translators in specific languages, and the Minister publishes a call for applications at least once per year in the Službeni glasnik RS.
Candidates for appointment must hold a university degree, demonstrate knowledge of Serbian legal and administrative terminology, and have at least five years of professional translation experience. The Udruženje naučnih i stručnih prevodilaca Srbije (Association of Scientific and Technical Translators of Serbia) offers preparatory courses for aspiring court interpreters. Once appointed, sworn translators work under the supervision of the president of the relevant viši sud (higher court), who reports any irregularities to the Ministry. Only an appointed stalni sudski tumač or prevodilac may produce an overen prevod (sworn/certified translation) bearing their court-issued seal (pečat), which has the legal status of an official document (javna isprava) in Serbian proceedings.
For documents intended for use outside Serbia — such as immigration applications to the United States, Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom — DoVisa's certified translations are widely accepted without the need for a Serbian court interpreter's seal. International authorities including USCIS, IRCC, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs accept certified translations with a translator's signed certification statement. When Serbian sworn translations are specifically required for domestic use, DoVisa coordinates through our network of appointed stalni sudski tumači to provide the appropriate certification level.
