How Bulgarian Certified Translation Works
Submit Your Documents Securely
Upload clear scans of your Bulgarian or foreign-language documents through our encrypted portal. We accept PDF, JPEG, and PNG formats. Bulgarian documents use Cyrillic script (кирилица) and often contain official stamps (печат), embossed seals, and handwritten annotations that require clear scanning. Our intake team verifies full legibility of all Cyrillic text and marginal notations before translation begins.
Professional Translator Assignment
Your documents are matched with a Bulgarian language specialist experienced in the specific document type. For Bulgarian civil status documents (актове за гражданско състояние), we assign translators with deep expertise in Bulgaria's vital records terminology, Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration conventions, and the formatting used by ГРАО (the Civil Registration and Administrative Services General Directorate). Each translator's credentials are verified before every assignment.
Translation with Certification
The assigned translator produces your certified translation with a formal statement of accuracy, professional credentials, signature, and date. A second qualified linguist reviews the translation for correct rendering of Bulgarian legal terminology, accurate Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration of proper nouns, and completeness. The certification confirms the translation faithfully represents the original Bulgarian document in its entirety.
Delivery with Full Documentation
Receive your certified translation as a high-resolution PDF for immediate use, with the original signed hard copy shipped via tracked international courier. For documents requiring apostille certification, DoVisa coordinates the process through Bulgaria's designated competent authorities — the Ministry of Justice for court and notarial documents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for civil status and administrative documents, or NACID for educational documents.

Common Scenarios for Bulgarian Document Translation
US Immigration with Bulgarian Documents
Bulgarian nationals applying for US visas, green cards, or naturalization must submit certified English translations of all Bulgarian-language documents to USCIS. Common documents include the удостоверение за раждане (birth certificate), удостоверение за сключен граждански брак (marriage certificate), свидетелство за съдимост (criminal record certificate), and academic дипломи. USCIS requires a translator's certificate of accuracy — DoVisa's certified translations meet this standard and are accepted for all immigration application categories.
UK & Irish Visa Applications
The UK Home Office (UKVI) and Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service require professional certified translations of all non-English documents for visa and settlement applications. Bulgarian documents commonly submitted include birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees (решение за развод), police clearance certificates, and employment contracts (трудов договор). Our translations include the translator's credentials, signed accuracy statement, contact details, and date — meeting all UKVI requirements.
Academic Credential Evaluation
Bulgarian дипломи, академични справки (transcripts), and сертификати (certificates) submitted to credential evaluation services such as WES, ECE, and NACES members in the United States, or UK ENIC in the United Kingdom, require certified English translations. Our academic translators understand the Bulgarian higher education system, including the бакалавър (bachelor), магистър (master), and доктор (doctoral) degree structure under the Bologna Process framework adopted by Bulgarian universities.
Canadian Immigration & Express Entry
Canada IRCC accepts certified translations for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, family sponsorship, and citizenship applications. Common Bulgarian documents translated include удостоверение за раждане, свидетелство за съдимост, academic дипломи and transcripts, and employment references. DoVisa handles Bulgarian-to-English and Bulgarian-to-French translations for Canadian immigration purposes, meeting all IRCC translation requirements.
International Family Law Proceedings
Cross-border divorce, child custody, and inheritance cases involving Bulgarian documents require certified translations of решение за развод (divorce decrees), удостоверения за наследници (certificates of heirs), нотариални актове (notarial deeds), and завещания (wills). Bulgarian family and succession law documents use specialized legal terminology that requires careful translation. DoVisa's legal translators handle complex Bulgarian civil procedure terminology for use in US, UK, Canadian, and Australian courts.
Australian Skilled & Partner Visa Applications
The Australian Department of Home Affairs requires certified translations of all non-English documents for skilled worker visas (subclass 189, 190, 491), partner visas (subclass 820/801), and other immigration categories. Bulgarian nationals submit translated birth certificates, police clearance certificates, academic qualifications, and employment references. DoVisa provides translations meeting DHA requirements, with apostille available through Bulgaria's competent authorities.
Bulgaria's Sworn Translator System: Заклет Преводач
Bulgaria operates a заклет преводач (sworn translator) system regulated by the Правилник за легализациите, заверките и преводите на документи и други книжа (Regulations on Legalizations, Certifications, and Translations of Documents), originally adopted by Council of Ministers Decree No. 184 of 1958 and substantively amended by Decree No. 263 of 24 November 2017. Under this framework, the Министерство на външните работи (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) maintains the official register of sworn translators through its Дирекция "Консулски отношения" (Consular Relations Directorate).
To qualify as a sworn translator, candidates must demonstrate university-level language qualifications and professional translation competence. Once registered, sworn translators perform translations on special forms or officially formatted letterhead, and they bear legal responsibility for the accuracy of their translations. All pages of the translation must be numbered and initialled by the translator. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs certifies the translator's signature by affixing a rectangular certification sticker containing the translator's name, place and date of certification, fee paid, unique identifier, official signature, and stamp. This certification gives the translation its legal force before Bulgarian domestic authorities.
DoVisa provides certified translations for international use — a distinct service from Bulgarian заверени преводи. Our certified translations are accepted by immigration authorities in the US (USCIS), UK (Home Office), Canada (IRCC), and Australia (DHA), countries that do not require Bulgaria's sworn translator system. For documents being submitted to Bulgarian domestic authorities such as municipalities, courts, or the NRA, a заверен превод certified by the MFA's Consular Relations Directorate is required. DoVisa can coordinate sworn translations through our network of MFA-registered Bulgarian sworn translators upon request.

Bulgaria's Apostille System: Multiple Competent Authorities
Bulgaria has been a Contracting Party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 29 April 2001. Like several other EU member states, Bulgaria distributes apostille competence across multiple institutions based on document type. Understanding which authority handles your specific document is critical to avoid processing delays — submitting to the wrong authority is the most common cause of rejected apostille applications in Bulgaria.
The Министерство на правосъдието (Ministry of Justice) apostilles documents emanating from courts (съдилища) and notaries (нотариуси). The Министерство на външните работи (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) apostilles civil status documents issued by municipalities — including удостоверение за раждане, удостоверение за сключен граждански брак, and свидетелство за съдимост — as well as certificates and attestations from ministries and state agencies. The НАЦИД (Национален център за информация и документация — National Centre for Information and Documentation) is competent for educational documents issued by universities, schools, and the Ministry of Education and Science. Since 15 June 2020, NACID issues e-Apostilles with QR codes that can be verified online. The областни администрации (regional administrations) apostille documents issued by mayors and municipal administrations.
DoVisa coordinates the complete apostille process, identifying the correct competent authority for your document type, managing submission, tracking, and courier delivery of the apostilled document. Standard apostille processing in Bulgaria takes 5-10 business days depending on the issuing authority and current volume. NACID's e-Apostille for educational documents is typically processed within 5 business days. For documents held abroad, Bulgarian consular missions can route apostille requests through the appropriate authority in Sofia.

Bulgaria designates the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NACID, and regional administrations as competent apostille authorities
Bulgarian Cyrillic Script: Translation Challenges and Transliteration
Bulgarian is written exclusively in Cyrillic script (кирилица), making accurate transliteration of proper nouns one of the most important aspects of Bulgarian document translation. Bulgaria officially adopted a standardized Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration system through the Transliteration Act of 2009 (Закон за транслитерацията), which prescribes specific letter mappings for official purposes including passport issuance, geographic names, and administrative documents. For example, the Bulgarian letter щ is transliterated as sht, ж as zh, ц as ts, and ъ (the yer sign, unique to Bulgarian among South Slavic languages) as a.
This standardized system is critical for immigration documents where name spellings must match across passports, birth certificates, and application forms. Inconsistent transliterations can cause delays or refusals at immigration agencies such as USCIS or the UK Home Office. DoVisa translators follow the official Bulgarian transliteration standard while cross-referencing the name spellings on the applicant's passport to ensure consistency. When discrepancies exist between the official transliteration and the passport spelling — a common occurrence for Bulgarians whose passports were issued before the 2009 Transliteration Act — we note the variation in the translator's certification to prevent confusion.
Bulgarian civil status documents also present unique layout challenges. The удостоверение за раждане and удостоверение за сключен граждански брак issued by ГРАО (Главна дирекция "Гражданска регистрация и административно обслужване" — Civil Registration and Administrative Services General Directorate) contain dense tabular information with pre-printed Cyrillic field labels, handwritten or typed entries, official stamps (печат), and marginal annotations. Older documents issued during the communist era (pre-1989) may use historical formatting and outdated institutional names that require specialized knowledge to translate accurately. DoVisa translators maintain expertise in both contemporary and historical Bulgarian document formats.

Bulgarian Document Translation FAQs
What types of Bulgarian documents can DoVisa translate?
We translate all types of Bulgarian documents including удостоверение за раждане (birth certificate), удостоверение за сключен граждански брак (marriage certificate), препис-извлечение от акт за смърт (death certificate extract), решение за развод (divorce decree), свидетелство за съдимост (criminal record certificate), диплома за висше образование (university diploma), академична справка (academic transcript), свидетелство за управление на МПС (driver's license), трудов договор (employment contract), нотариален акт (notarial deed), and пълномощно (power of attorney). All translations are certified and accepted by international immigration authorities.
Do I need a заклет преводач (sworn translator) for my Bulgarian documents?
It depends on where you are submitting the documents. For submission to Bulgarian domestic authorities — courts, municipalities, the NRA, or the MFA's Consular Relations Directorate — a заверен превод (certified translation) produced by a заклет преводач (sworn translator) registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Правилник за легализациите, заверките и преводите (Regulations on Legalizations, Certifications, and Translations) is required. However, for submission to international authorities such as USCIS (United States), UK Home Office, IRCC (Canada), or Australian Department of Home Affairs, DoVisa's certified translations are accepted and a Bulgarian заверен превод is not required. If you need a sworn translation for Bulgarian authorities, DoVisa can coordinate this through our network of MFA-registered translators.
How long does Bulgarian document translation take?
Standard certified translation of Bulgarian documents is delivered within 4-6 business days. Express processing is available for 2-3 business days, and rush delivery within 24 hours is offered for select single-page document types such as birth and marriage certificates. Turnaround depends on document length, complexity, and language pair. Apostille processing through Bulgaria's competent authorities requires additional time — typically 5-10 business days depending on the issuing authority and document type.
What languages can Bulgarian documents be translated to and from?
DoVisa offers 100+ language pairs for Bulgarian documents. The most common pairs include Bulgarian to English, Bulgarian to German, Bulgarian to French, Bulgarian to Spanish, Bulgarian to Italian, Bulgarian to Greek, Bulgarian to Turkish, and Bulgarian to Romanian. We also handle translations from these languages into Bulgarian. Our network of professional translators covers every major world language, ensuring your Bulgarian documents can be translated for use in any country.
Will DoVisa translations be accepted by USCIS and the UK Home Office?
Yes. USCIS requires certified translations with a translator's certificate of accuracy — DoVisa's certified translations meet this standard for all immigration application types including family-based petitions, adjustment of status, and naturalization. The UK Home Office (UKVI) requires professional translations with the translator's credentials, a signed statement of accuracy, contact details, and date — our translations include all required elements. Neither USCIS nor UKVI requires a Bulgarian заверен превод. Our certified translations are also accepted by Canada IRCC, Australian DHA, and New Zealand Immigration.
Is Bulgaria a member of the Hague Apostille Convention?
Yes. Bulgaria has been a Contracting Party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 29 April 2001. Bulgaria designates multiple competent authorities: the Ministry of Justice for court and notarial documents; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for civil status and administrative documents; NACID (National Centre for Information and Documentation) for educational documents — including e-Apostilles with QR codes since June 2020; and regional administrations for documents issued by mayors and municipalities. Documents bearing a Bulgarian apostille are recognized in all 125+ Convention member states without further legalization. DoVisa coordinates apostille processing through the appropriate authority.
What is an apostille and do I need one for my Bulgarian documents?
An apostille is a certificate issued under the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 that authenticates the origin of a public document for use in another Convention member country. You need an apostille if the destination country requires document authentication beyond certified translation — for example, many countries require apostilled birth certificates for marriage registration or visa applications. Bulgaria's apostille format varies by authority: NACID issues e-Apostilles for educational documents, while the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs issue physical apostilles. DoVisa can arrange apostille processing as an add-on service alongside your translation.
How much does certified Bulgarian translation cost?
DoVisa's Bulgarian translation pricing follows a transparent per-page structure with volume discounts that apply automatically for larger projects. Pricing varies based on document length, language pair, and processing speed. Express and rush service options are available for time-sensitive projects. Apostille processing through Bulgaria's competent authorities is quoted separately depending on the issuing authority. Upload your documents on our order page to receive an instant, detailed quote — no hidden fees.
Can DoVisa translate handwritten Bulgarian documents?
Yes. We regularly translate handwritten Bulgarian documents including older civil status records issued during the communist era (pre-1989), court documents, and historical records. Handwritten Bulgarian Cyrillic can present additional challenges due to individual penmanship styles and older orthographic conventions. Some documents from the socialist period use institutional names and terminology that have since changed, requiring specialized historical knowledge. We recommend providing the highest quality scan possible — at least 300 DPI — to ensure accurate translation of handwritten Cyrillic content.
What format will I receive my translation in?
You will receive your certified translation as a high-resolution PDF delivered via email, suitable for immediate digital submission to immigration authorities and other agencies. The PDF includes the full translation, the translator's certification statement, credentials, signature, and date. A physical hard copy with original wet-ink signature is shipped via tracked international courier. For documents paired with apostille service, the apostilled document is shipped separately once processed by the relevant Bulgarian competent authority.
How does DoVisa handle Bulgarian Cyrillic transliteration in translations?
Bulgarian proper nouns — personal names, place names, and institutional names — require careful Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration. Bulgaria adopted a standardized transliteration system under the Transliteration Act of 2009 (Закон за транслитерацията). Our translators follow this official standard while cross-referencing the name spellings on the applicant's passport to ensure consistency across all documents. When discrepancies exist between the official transliteration and an older passport spelling — a common issue for passports issued before 2009 — we note the variation in the translator's certification to prevent confusion at immigration authorities.
Does Bulgaria offer electronic apostilles?
Yes, but only for certain document types. NACID (National Centre for Information and Documentation) has issued e-Apostilles with QR codes for educational documents since 15 June 2020. These electronic apostilles can be verified online through NACID's e-Register. However, the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently issue only physical apostilles for court, notarial, civil status, and administrative documents. DoVisa can coordinate both electronic and physical apostille processing depending on your document type.
Can I use Bulgaria's EU multilingual standard forms instead of a translation?
Under EU Regulation 2016/1191 on promoting the free movement of citizens, Bulgaria — as an EU member state since 2007 — can issue multilingual standard forms as translation aids for certain document categories when submitting to other EU member states. These forms cover birth, death, marriage, civil partnership, domicile, and absence of criminal record. However, multilingual standard forms are not a substitute for certified translations when submitting documents to non-EU countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom. For non-EU destinations, a certified translation remains required. DoVisa handles both scenarios and can advise on whether a multilingual form or certified translation is appropriate for your destination.
