Certified Bosnian Document Translation

Bosnia and Herzegovina operates a court-regulated sworn translator system that reflects the country's unique constitutional structure established by Annex 4 of the Dayton Peace Agreement. The system functions at the entity level, with separate regulatory frameworks in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federacija Bosne i Hercegovine), Republika Srpska, and the Brčko District (Brčko distrikt). Translators who wish to produce legally binding translations for use before BiH courts and authorities must be appointed as stalni sudski tumači (permanent court interpreters) by the competent authority in their respective entity.

In the Federation of BiH, court interpreters are appointed by the cantonal ministries of justice within each of the ten cantons. In Republika Srpska, appointments are administered by the Ministarstvo pravde Republike Srpske (Ministry of Justice of Republika Srpska), and the professional standards are supported by the Udruženje sudskih tumača Republike Srpske (USTRS) — the Association of Court Interpreters of Republika Srpska. The Brčko District has its own appointment mechanism through its judicial commission. Only appointed stalni sudski tumači may produce an ovjereni prijevod (sworn translation) bearing their court-issued seal, which carries the legal weight of an official document (javna isprava) in BiH proceedings.

For documents intended for use outside Bosnia and Herzegovina — such as immigration applications to the United States, Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom — DoVisa's certified translations are widely accepted without the need for a BiH court interpreter's seal. International authorities including USCIS, IRCC, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs accept certified translations with a translator's signed certification statement. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention through state succession from the former Yugoslavia, with the Convention entering into force on 6 March 1992. The formal declaration of succession was deposited on 23 August 1993. This means that BiH public documents can be authenticated with an apostille for use in over 120 other Convention member states, replacing the more cumbersome consular legalization process.

The apostille system in Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects the country's entity-based structure. Three categories of competent authorities are designated to issue apostilles: općinski sudovi (municipal courts) in the Federation of BiH, osnovni sudovi (basic courts) in Republika Srpska, and the Osnovni sud Brčko distrikta (Basic Court of Brčko District). Each court issues apostilles for documents originating from bodies within its territorial jurisdiction. The apostille format in Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of a printed sticker with a handwritten signature of an authorized official, an official court seal, and a hologram for security.
