Paraguay is one of the few countries in the Americas with two official languages — Spanish and Guaraní — both enshrined in Article 140 of the 1992 Constitution. While Spanish dominates government documentation and legal proceedings, Guaraní holds deep cultural significance and is spoken by approximately 77% of the population, including many monolingual Guaraní speakers in rural areas. The Secretaría de Políticas Lingüísticas (SPL) oversees Guaraní standardization and the promotion of bilingual documentation practices throughout Paraguay.
This bilingual reality creates unique translation challenges.
