The Georgian language (ქართული ენა) is written in the Mkhedruli script (მხედრული), one of only 14 writing systems in the world used by a single language — recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The script consists of 33 letters and is unicameral, meaning it has no uppercase or lowercase distinction, unlike Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek scripts.
Mkhedruli includes sounds with no direct English equivalent — ejective consonants such as ყ (q'), წ (ts'), ჭ (ch'), and ძ (dz). Multiple valid romanization systems exist, leading to different English renderings of the same Georgian name. A person's name may appear differently across their birth certificate, passport, and academic diploma depending on which transliteration standard was applied.
