What Is the Malawi Health Declaration?

The Malawi Health Declaration is an online pre-arrival health screening required by Malawian Port Health authorities for inbound travellers. Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow rapid health surveillance at ports of entry, the declaration remains in use to collect arrival health data, vaccination details and recent travel history. The registration helps the Ministry of Health and Port Health Officers prioritise inspections and provide faster advice to travellers who may need testing or follow-up on arrival.

You submit the declaration through official Port Health channels or via authorised services like DoVisa. The form collects basic personal and passport details, your recent countries of travel, vaccination certificates (yellow fever when applicable) and contact information for your stay in Malawi. After approval you receive an electronic confirmation — typically an email or downloadable PDF with a QR or reference number — which airlines or Port Health staff may check at departure or arrival.

The Malawi Health Declaration is a public-health screening instrument — it is not a visa or travel permit and does not replace immigration requirements. Many nationalities now need an e-Visa or visa prior to travel (see official e-Visa portal). Completing the declaration does not guarantee entry: final clearance remains the responsibility of Immigration and Port Health at the point of entry.

For full entry rules see Malawi visa information and the official e‑Visa/immigration portals. When you're ready, Apply for your Malawi Health Declaration now and we'll guide you through the checklist and submission.

Malawi Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport should have at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival and at least one blank page for entry stamps — see the UK GOV guidance for Malawi entry rules at GOV.UK.

Vaccination Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Follow CDC guidance for Malawi vaccinations at CDC Malawi.

Customs & Prohibited Imports

Malawi maintains a list of prohibited and restricted imports including narcotics and psychotropic substances, certain processed foodstuffs and specified secondhand clothing or underwear; check the Malawi Revenue Authority brochure at MRA Restricted & Prohibited Goods.

Health Screening & Tests

Port Health may request proof of vaccination, a recent test, or further screening based on travel history. Complete the declaration accurately to avoid delays — U.S. Embassy guidance notes health measures and alerts at U.S. Embassy Malawi.

Travel Insurance & Medical Evacuation

Medical facilities outside major centres are limited — travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage is strongly recommended, especially for adventure and remote-area travel.

Travel Tips for Malawi Visitors

Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa known for Lake Malawi and national parks. Main international arrival airports are Kamuzu International Airport (Lilongwe — LLW) and Chileka / Blantyre (BLZ); other scheduled airports include Mzuzu (ZZU) and Likoma Island (LIX). Land border posts operate across neighbouring Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

  • Currency: Malawian Kwacha (MWK). US dollars are widely accepted for some tourist services and at entry points — carry small USD notes for contingency.
  • Language: Chichewa is widely spoken; English is an official language and commonly used in travel and tourism.
  • Time zone: Central Africa Time (GMT+2).
  • Best time to visit: May–October for drier weather and wildlife viewing; wet season runs November–April.
  • Airport transfers: Arrange transfers in advance — Lilongwe (LLW) and Blantyre (BLZ) have limited public transport options after hours.
  • Health: Take malaria precautions in many areas; check CDC guidance and complete the health declaration before travel.
  • Customs: Avoid bringing prohibited goods (see MRA brochure) — some everyday food items and secondhand clothing are restricted.
  • Safety: Exercise caution in urban areas at night, secure valuables, and use reputable operators for lake and safari excursions.
