What Is the Malawi eVisa?
The Malawi eVisa is the official electronic visa issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services of Malawi. Launched alongside the government e-Visa portal, it replaces the older paper/consular-only routes for most visitors and lets applicants complete everything online via evisa.gov.mw. Eligibility, fee payment, and document upload are handled on the portal and applications are reviewed by Malawi immigration officials.
You apply on the government portal (or through DoVisa) — upload a passport bio-data page, a recent passport-style photo, travel details and accommodation confirmation, then pay online. After the Immigration Service approves your application you receive an approval letter by email; print a copy to present at immigration on arrival. Processing options vary by speed; the fastest internal processing option available via our service is 8 days (super rush from the DB).
The Malawi eVisa is an entry visa and must be presented at the port of entry. It does not guarantee admission — border officers may still interview or refuse entry. Recent policy updates in 2026 mean most nationalities now require a visa in advance; check the official e-Visa portal for the latest eligibility list. The approval letter is mandatory to board flights to Malawi in many airlines' checks.
For an overview of other Malawi entry rules see Malawi visa information and the official portal at evisa.gov.mw. Ready to apply online? Apply for your Malawi eVisa now.

Malawi Entry Requirements & Restrictions
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Upload a clear digital copy of the bio-data page to the eVisa portal. See Malawi Immigration — Visa.
Vaccination Requirements
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever risk, per the CDC travel health guidance. Other routine vaccines are recommended; review the CDC Malawi page at CDC — Malawi.
Customs & Restricted Imports
Malawi enforces a wide list of prohibited and restricted imports, including controls on secondhand clothing, some foodstuffs and certain plastics — check the official import guidance. Declare all foreign currency on arrival and expect luggage checks at ports of entry. See Malawi — Prohibited and Restricted Imports.
Travel Insurance & Funds
Travel insurance is strongly advised — medical evacuation options are limited outside major centres. Carry evidence of accommodation and sufficient funds for your stay; immigration officers may ask to see confirmations or cash equivalents.
Drones & Controlled Items
Import of drones, commercial goods, or large quantities of electronics can require permits or be restricted — check customs rules before travel and contact the Department of Immigration for commercial import queries.
Travel Tips for Malawi Visitors
Malawi is a landlocked country known for Lake Malawi, wildlife reserves and friendly hospitality. International flights mainly arrive in Lilongwe or Blantyre; border posts serve regional overland travel. Here are practical tips for first-time visitors:
- Currency: Malawian Kwacha (MWK). US dollars are commonly accepted for airport fees and at larger hotels — carry some MWK for markets and remote areas.
- Language: Chichewa is the national language; English is widely used in hotels, tour operators and government offices.
- Time zone: Central Africa Time (CAT) — GMT+2.
- ATMs & cards: ATMs are available in Lilongwe and Blantyre but may be scarce in rural areas; many smaller lodges prefer cash payments in MWK.
- Local travel realities: Fuel shortages and local strikes can disrupt road schedules — plan extra time for road transfers and avoid night driving outside cities.
- Health & insects: Mosquito-borne illnesses occur — pack repellent and consider antimalarial advice from your doctor.
- Permits & drones: If you plan to fly a drone for photography, check permit rules in advance; some parks require prior permission.
- Print your eVisa approval: Airlines often require the approval letter at check-in — keep a printed copy and an offline screenshot of the approval email.
