AU Passport Renewal
Apply for your AU Passport Renewal online through the Australian Passport Office or DoVisa — standard processing in about 6 weeks with priority options.
What Is the AU Passport Renewal?
The AU Passport Renewal is the standard process for Australian citizens to replace or renew an adult passport that meets the simplified renewal criteria. Managed by the Australian Passport Office via the official Passports portal, the renewal route lets eligible adults complete the online form, supply required identity documents and photos, then lodge the printed application at a participating Australia Post outlet or Australian mission overseas. The simplified renewal option is available when your previous passport was issued when you were aged 16 or older and meets the government’s issue-date and validity rules.
You apply through the official portal (online.passports.gov.au) or use DoVisa for a guided submission, document checks, and booking help. On approval you receive your new physical passport by Registered Post; the office will email and SMS a tracking number when it ships. Faster priority and fast-track processing options are available for urgent travel subject to eligibility.
The AU Passport Renewal streamlines replacement for travellers who meet the criteria — it is not a visa or travel authorisation. Your renewed passport is a travel document; it does not transfer visas issued in your old passport automatically. Recent procedural notes include the continued availability of Priority (2 business days) and Fast Track (5 business days) services for complete applications, and the official discontinuation of the Frequent Traveller Passport product in 2017.
For broader entry rules see Australia visa information and the Australian Passport Office site (passports.gov.au). Ready to start? Apply for your AU Passport Renewal now.

Australia Passport Renewal Requirements & Restrictions
Previous Passport & Eligibility
To use the simplified renewal you must present your most recent passport (current or expired less than 3 years) and it must have been issued when you were aged 16 or over. If your previous passport was issued before 1 January 2006, you must apply in person. See Australian Passport - Adult passport.
Photos & Referee/Guarantor
Provide three colour passport photos that meet the official photo guidelines. You will also need a referee or guarantor depending on whether you complete an online or paper form — referees must meet identity and passport criteria. See Passport photo guidelines.
Processing Times & Lodgement
Allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing once you lodge a complete application. Priority (2 business days) and Fast Track (5 business days) options exist for eligible, complete applications — these exclude postage and delivery times. See the application portal at online.passports.gov.au.
Customs, Biosecurity & Prohibited Items
Australia enforces strict biosecurity and customs rules. Prohibited or restricted imports include fresh food, plants, some animal products, weapons, explosives, illegal drugs, and certain goods requiring permits. Non-prescription e-cigarettes and vaping liquids are widely restricted; declare any restricted items. See Australian Border Force — Can you bring it in?.
Health & Vaccination Notes
No routine vaccinations are required to apply for a passport. Yellow fever vaccination certificates are required only when arriving from a risk country as per health advisories. For travel health guidance see Smartraveller.
Travel Tips for Australia Visitors & Renewers
Australia is large and diverse — plan passport renewals and travel logistics carefully. Major international gateways include Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD), Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL), Brisbane (BNE) and Perth (PER). Below are practical tips for both renewing and travelling.
- Currency: Australian Dollar (AUD). Declare amounts over 10,000 AUD on arrival or departure.
- Language: English is the official language; services are widely available in English across cities and consular posts.
- Time zone: AEST (UTC+10); AEDT (UTC+11) during daylight saving in affected states.
- Plan for processing: Allow at least 6 weeks for standard renewal; use Priority or Fast Track only if you meet eligibility and have complete documents.
- Photos & guarantor: Follow the passport photo rules closely — poor photos are a leading cause of delay.
- Post & pickup: Renewed passports are sent by Registered Post; you’ll receive email/SMS with tracking when dispatched.
- SmartGate: If you hold an ePassport and meet criteria you can use SmartGate at major airports to speed immigration.
- Biosecurity rules: Don’t bring fresh foods, certain plant/animal products, or contentious items — check ABF guidance before packing.
