Papiamentu (spelled with a 'u' in Curaçao, distinguishing it from the Aruban variant Papiamento spelled with an 'o') is the primary spoken language of Curaçao and holds official language status alongside Dutch. It is a Portuguese- and Spanish-based Creole language with significant Dutch, English, and West African influences. Papiamentu has been recognized as an official language of Curaçao since the island became an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 10 October 2010.
While Dutch remains the primary language of formal legal and administrative documentation — including vital records from the Burgerlijke Stand (Civil Registry), court orders from the Gerecht in Eerste Aanleg van Curaçao, and official government correspondence — Papiamentu is increasingly used in certain official communications and may appear in annotations, informal fields, and community-facing government documents.
For certified translation purposes, this means Curaçaoan documents may require translation from Dutch, Papiamentu, or a combination of both. DoVisa's network includes translators certified in Papiamentu-to-English, Papiamentu-to-Dutch, Papiamentu-to-Spanish, and the full set of reverse language pairs. We also translate from Dutch (the primary administrative language) into English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and over 100 other languages. Our translators are familiar with the specific conventions of Curaçaoan civil registry documents, court orders, and notarial acts produced within the Dutch Caribbean legal framework.
