What Is the Sri Lanka Health Declaration?

The Sri Lanka Health Declaration is an official pre‑arrival health registration managed by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health and port medical services. Introduced to support public‑health screening at airports and seaports, the declaration collects basic traveller health information, recent vaccination and testing status, and contact details so port health officers can prioritise arrivals and respond to infectious‑disease events. The form is intended for inbound travellers who may be subject to health checks on arrival.

You can submit the declaration through authorised online portals or present a completed paper/printable form at the health counter on arrival. The Ministry of Health maintains guidance on health services at ports and airports (see the official link below). After you submit, you will typically receive a confirmation or submission receipt that you should keep on your phone or printed copy — airlines or port health staff may request proof of submission or your vaccination evidence during check‑in or on arrival.

The declaration is a public‑health registration — it is not a visa or entry permit. Immigration and visa rules (including ETAs and visas) remain the responsibility of the Department of Immigration and Emigration; health screening does not guarantee entry. Note: several official notices clarify that submission of a health declaration is not required for all arriving passengers and requirements can vary by flight, origin country, and current health alerts — always check the Ministry of Health and your airline before travel.

Sri Lanka Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. Keep a printed copy of your passport data page available for checks by immigration and health officials.

Vaccination & Testing Rules

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required only if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever transmission risk. Check the Ministry of Health and CDC Sri Lanka for current guidance.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Sri Lanka prohibits or restricts import of narcotics, weapons, pornographic material, and items controlled under CITES (protected flora and fauna). High‑value goods such as gold, jewellery and gems have declaration rules; liquor and certain medicines are subject to controls. See Sri Lanka Customs for details.

Health Declaration & Arrival Screening

Health declaration submission may be requested by port health; however, submission is not required for all arriving passengers — follow your airline instructions and the Ministry of Health notice at health.gov.lk.

Travel Insurance and Medical Care

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Medical facilities outside Colombo may be limited; evacuation to Colombo could be necessary for serious illness. Check policy cover for infectious‑disease treatment and evacuation.

Travel Tips for Sri Lanka Visitors

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean with diverse climates and rich cultural heritage. Most international arrivals land at Bandaranaike International Airport north of Colombo.

  • Airports: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI), and Jaffna International Airport (Jaffna).
  • Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Major hotels and tourism businesses accept USD in many locations, but LKR is required for local purchases and smaller islands.
  • Language: Sinhala and Tamil are official languages. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels and at airports.
  • Time zone: Sri Lanka Standard Time is GMT+5:30.
  • Best time to visit: December to March for the west and south coasts; May to September for the east coast.
  • Local customs: Dress modestly at religious sites; remove shoes and hats when entering temples; public displays of affection can be frowned upon.
  • Health: Mosquito‑borne diseases (dengue, chikungunya) are present — use repellent and seek medical advice for fever. Check the CDC page for current health notices.
  • Transfers: Arrange transfers in advance — road and domestic services can be affected by weather and local events.
