What Is the China Paper Visa?

The China Paper Visa is a traditional visa sticker physically affixed to a passport page, issued by Chinese embassies, consulates, and authorized Visa Application Centers worldwide. It is required for travelers who are not eligible for China's visa-free entry policies or who are visiting for purposes such as work, long-term study, journalism, or stays exceeding the visa-free duration. The visa is applied for through the official China Online Visa Application (COVA) system at visaforchina.cn, followed by an in-person appointment for most applicants.

To obtain the visa, you must first complete the online application form, upload required documents, and then visit a Visa Application Center (or embassy/consulate) in your country of residence for document submission, biometrics (fingerprinting for ages 14-70), and payment of the government fee. Upon approval, a visa sticker is placed in your passport, specifying the visa type (e.g., L for tourism, M for business, Z for work), validity period, number of entries, and duration of each stay. This process typically takes 4 to 10 business days, though expedited services are available at some locations.

This visa is distinct from China's unilateral visa-free policies, which allow citizens of over 40 countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands) to enter for up to 30 days without a visa until December 31, 2026. The paper visa is necessary for longer visits, specific activities, or for nationals of non-exempt countries. It is also different from an eVisa, which China offers only for specific categories like the Hainan Tourist eVisa or the Shanghai 144-Hour Transit Visa Waiver. A key recent change is the exemption of fingerprint collection for short-term visa applicants (stay up to 180 days) until December 31, 2026, though in-person submission is still required.

China Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity & Blank Pages

Your passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity from your planned entry date and contain at least 2 blank visa pages. Passports with damaged covers or pages may be refused. See Chinese Consulate requirements.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is required if you are arriving from or have transited through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. No other vaccinations are mandatory for entry. See CDC China travel health.

Customs & Prohibited Items

China strictly prohibits importing arms, ammunition, explosives, counterfeit currencies, and securities. Also banned are printed matter, films, photos, or media deemed harmful to China's politics, economy, culture, or morality. All luggage is scanned on arrival. See China Customs prohibited items.

Medical Screening on Arrival

Travelers may be subject to medical screening, including body temperature checks and, in some cases, throat/nasal swabs or blood tests, under China's Frontier Health and Quarantine Laws. Non-compliance can result in entry refusal.

Financial Proof & Accommodation

You may be asked to show proof of sufficient funds for your stay and confirmed accommodation bookings. While not always checked, having these documents ready is advised for a smooth immigration process.

Travel Tips for China Visitors

China is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from the megacities of Beijing and Shanghai to the rural expanses of the Silk Road. Most international travelers arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), or Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN). Other major gateways include Chengdu (CTU), Xi'an (XIY), and Hangzhou (HGH).

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Avoid major holidays like Chinese New Year (late Jan/early Feb) and National Day (first week of October).
  • Currency: Chinese Yuan (CNY, RMB). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for smaller vendors and rural areas. Currency exchange is available at airports and banks.
  • Language: Mandarin is the official language. English is not widely spoken outside major hotels and tourist areas — have your hotel address written in Chinese characters.
  • Time zone: China Standard Time (CST) is GMT+8 nationwide — there is no daylight saving time.
  • Internet access: Many Western websites and apps (Google, Facebook, WhatsApp) are blocked. Use a reputable VPN service if you need access, but be aware of local regulations.
  • Transport: High-speed rail networks are extensive and efficient. Book tickets in advance via apps like Trip.com or at train stations. Didi is China's main ride-hailing app.
  • Cultural etiquette: A slight nod or bow is a common greeting. Avoid discussing sensitive political topics. Tipping is not customary and can be considered rude.
  • Keep documents handy: Carry your passport with visa at all times, as hotels require it for registration and police may conduct random checks.
