What Is the China Tourist Visa?

The China Tourist Visa (commonly issued as the L category) is the consular visa required for most foreign nationals travelling to mainland China for tourism, family visits and short leisure trips. In 2025–2026 China modernised parts of its application workflow: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduced the COVA (China Online Visa Application) portal and new digital guidance while consulates continue to process and issue traditional visa stickers or labels in passports.

Applicants start a case on the official portal (consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ or the COVA system at cova.mfa.gov.cn) then attend a visa application centre or embassy appointment for biometrics and submission where required. DoVisa offers guided completion, document checks, and appointment booking to help prepare your embassy submission — you will receive a submission confirmation and instructions for the in-person appointment; the final visa is affixed to your passport by the issuing mission after approval.

The China Tourist Visa is an entry visa issued by Chinese consular authorities — it is distinct from visa‑free arrangements and temporary transit policies. China has extended unilateral visa‑free access for certain nationalities through December 31, 2026, and in 2025 launched new online arrival card and COVA systems to streamline processing; however the visa remains required when you do not qualify for visa‑free entry or transit exemptions. The visa does not replace local permits required for travel to restricted areas such as Tibet — obtain additional permits separately.

For full rules see China visa information and the official guidance at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA. When you're ready, Apply for your China Tourist Visa now with DoVisa assistance.

  • Third‑country nationals who must prove legal residence in the country where they apply

  • Airline and vessel crew on active official duty
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders arriving on official business

China Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity & Visa Pages

Your passport must have at least 6 months’ validity from your date of arrival and at least 2 blank visa pages for stamping and affixation of a visa sticker. See the consular guidance at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/.

Biometrics & Appointment

Most applicants aged 14–70 must submit biometric data in person at a visa application centre or embassy as part of the application process. Book your appointment after starting the online application on the COVA portal (cova.mfa.gov.cn), and bring originals to your appointment.

Vaccination Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. Routine vaccinations and COVID‑19 recommendations follow CDC guidance — check the CDC China page for current health advice (CDC — China).

Customs & Prohibited Items

China prohibits importing arms, ammunition and explosives, counterfeit currency and forged securities, and other items listed by customs. Declare goods that may be taxed or restricted — consult General Administration of Customs for the full prohibited list (customs.gov.cn).

Itinerary, Accommodation & Funds

You should carry a round‑trip ticket, confirmed hotel reservations or invitation letters, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Some consulates request an itinerary or invitation letter for L‑visa applications; follow local VAC instructions.

Travel Tips for China Visitors

China is vast and diverse — planning saves time. Major international gateways include Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), with other international hubs serving large volumes of arrivals. Domestic transfers are extensive but can be lengthy between regions.

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) for milder weather and clearer skies.
  • Currency: Renminbi / Chinese Yuan (CNY). Credit cards are accepted in major cities; cash remains useful in smaller towns. Some tourist businesses accept USD but expect limited acceptance outside major hotels.
  • Language: Mandarin Chinese is the official language; English is commonly available in major hotels, airports and tourist sites but limited in rural areas.
  • Time zone: China Standard Time (GMT+8) nationwide despite the country’s size.
  • Register your accommodation: Hotels register foreign guests with local Public Security Bureaus on check‑in — carry your passport at all times.
  • Restricted areas: Travel to Tibet and certain border regions requires additional permits — obtain these before travel.
  • Internet & apps: Many Western sites and apps are blocked — install and test necessary travel apps, offline maps and translations before arrival.
  • Plan visa timing: Start your embassy or VAC application early to allow for appointment booking and any document requests.
