What Is the Papua New Guinea eVisa?

The Papua New Guinea eVisa is an online visitor visa issued by the Immigration & Citizenship Authority (ICA) of Papua New Guinea. Launched as part of ICA’s move to digitise entry permits, the eVisa replaces many paper applications and allows eligible travellers to apply for a visitor entry permit via the official eVisa portal at evisa.ica.gov.pg. The online system shortens processing for routine tourist and business visits and reduces time spent at immigration counters on arrival.

You apply through the ICA eVisa portal or through DoVisa — DoVisa fills the online application, checks document uploads (passport biodata photo, recent passport-style photo, itinerary, accommodation) and submits on your behalf. Approved applicants receive an electronic visa document (PDF) and an emailed confirmation to present at check-in and immigration. Keep a printed copy of your visa approval to show to immigration officers when you land.

The eVisa is an entry permit — not a long-term residence document. It authorises a single entry for the period stated on the visa (30 or 60 days depending on the visa type) and must be used within the validity window. Recent changes: ICA reintroduced a limited Visa on Arrival scheme for specific nationalities while expanding the online eVisa portal and adding a PNG Digital Arrival Card requirement for all travellers effective 1 October 2025 via ICA. The eVisa does not replace health checks, customs declarations, or any special permits required for restricted provinces.

For more about entry rules see Papua New Guinea visa information and the official eVisa portal at evisa.ica.gov.pg. When you’re ready, Apply now.

Papua New Guinea Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. See ICA guidance at ICA — Visitor visa.

Vaccination & Health

A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. The CDC and UK travel advice list recommended vaccinations (hepatitis A, routine immunisations) — check CDC PNG.

Customs & Prohibited Items

PNG Customs prohibits many items including firearms, illicit drugs, pornographic materials and certain agricultural products — see official prohibited imports lists. Firecrackers and some electronics may require permits. See PNG Customs — Prohibitions.

Currency Declaration

Amounts above PGK 20,000 must be declared on entry and exit. Carry proof of funds or return/onward ticket if requested by immigration. See official travel advice at U.S. State Dept.

Vaping & Other Restrictions

Papua New Guinea banned the import and use of vape products with an enforcement notice effective in 2025 — e-cigarettes may be confiscated. Check PNG health notices and customs updates before travel.

Travel Tips for Papua New Guinea Visitors

Papua New Guinea is a large, diverse country with limited infrastructure outside main centres. International flights mainly arrive at Jacksons International Airport (Port Moresby — POM); other international arrival airports you may see in schedules include Lae / Nadzab (LAE), Rabaul / Tokua (RAB), Buka (BUA) and Daru (DAU). Sea ports accept international arrivals at major harbours — check your carrier for port details.

  • Currency: Papua New Guinea Kina (PGK). Carry PGK for local markets; many hotels and tour operators accept cards and US dollars in Port Moresby but remote areas are cash-only.
  • Language: Tok Pisin and English are widely used — English is common in airports, hotels and with guides.
  • Time zone: GMT+10 (no daylight saving) — plan transfers accordingly for domestic flights and charter services.
  • Vape ban: PNG banned vape imports and use in 2025 — devices and e-liquid can be seized at customs.
  • Safety: Avoid walking at night in Port Moresby and other cities; travel.gc.ca and travel.state.gov advise using vetted guides and private transfers.
  • Remote travel: Medical facilities are limited — bring a first-aid kit, travel insurance that covers evacuation, and copies of important documents.
  • Check-in checklist: Airlines often check that you have an approved eVisa and onward ticket before boarding — keep your ICA approval PDF and printed copy handy.
