What Is the Norway Schengen Visa?

The Norway Schengen Visa is the short-stay visa issued for travel to Norway and other Schengen countries for tourism, business, family visits or short study/training trips. It is governed by Schengen rules and processed through the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and Norwegian embassies/consulates worldwide. The Schengen visitor visa replaced many older bilateral permits for short stays and centralises short-stay entry decisions under EU/Schengen policy; applications are registered in the UDI portal and fingerprints are usually taken during the biometric appointment.

You start your application on the official UDI portal (udi.no — Want to apply) or at the local Norwegian embassy/consulate/VFS centre. After you register and attend your appointment (documents + biometrics), the embassy will decide the application; most short-stay decisions are available within the standard processing timeframe. On approval you collect your passport with a visa sticker and official decision; you may also receive confirmation emails from the consulate or application service provider regarding your appointment and next steps.

The Norway Schengen Visa is an entry permit — not a residence permit — and it grants short-stay travel rights (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). New border systems (EES and ETIAS) are being rolled out across Europe and affect short stays; these changes do not replace the visa but add biometric/authorisation checks at the external border. The visa does not guarantee entry — final admission is decided by border control on arrival.

For full Norway entry rules see Norway visa information and the official UDI portal (https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/). When you're ready, Apply now and start your guided application with document checks and appointment support.

Norway Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must be issued within the last 10 years and have an expiry date at least 3 months after your planned exit from the Schengen area. Carry blank pages for stamps. See GOV.UK entry requirements.

Vaccination & Health Advice

No routine vaccinations are mandatory for entry to Norway. Stay up to date with routine vaccines; consult the CDC Norway page for recommended vaccines and travel health notices. If you have recent medical needs, carry supporting prescriptions. See CDC — Norway.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Norway restricts or prohibits certain imports including weapons, explosives, controlled drugs, endangered animal products, and some foodstuffs. New rules affect nicotine/e‑cigarette imports — check Norway Customs (Toll.no) for specifics and declaration rules.

Proof of Funds, Itinerary & Insurance

Border authorities may ask for a return/onward ticket, confirmed accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Travel insurance that meets Schengen requirements is strongly recommended — have policy details ready for checks.

Restricted Goods: Electronics & Drones

Some specialised items such as drones, certain medicines, and high‑powered electronics may require permits or declaration. If you plan to bring restricted equipment, consult Norwegian authorities in advance and declare items at arrival if required.

Travel Tips for Norway Visitors

Norway stretches from temperate fjords in the south to Arctic islands in the north — plan transfers and weather for your route. The main international gateway is Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL); other international airports include Bergen Airport Flesland, Stavanger Airport, Trondheim Airport Værnes, and Tromsø Airport Langnes. Major seaports accept international arrivals for ferries and cruise passengers; immigration control takes place at the port of entry.

  • Best time to visit: Summer (June–August) for fjords and long daylight; winter (Dec–Mar) for northern lights and skiing.
  • Currency: Norwegian Krone (NOK). Cards are widely accepted; carry NOK for small local purchases.
  • Language: Norwegian is the official language; English is widely spoken in tourism and transport.
  • Time zone: Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) in summer.
  • Transport: Trains and domestic flights connect Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and northern hubs — allow extra time for connections in winter.
  • Customs caution: Do not attempt to import banned nicotine products or undeclared restricted goods — fines and confiscation apply.
  • Border checks: If you need a visa, have your visa sticker and supporting documents ready for immigration at arrival (immigration checks happen at the first port of entry, e.g., OSL).
