What Is the Nigeria eVisa?

The Nigeria eVisa is an electronic visa issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service that allows eligible foreign nationals to apply online for short-stay travel for tourism, business, and visiting family. Launched as part of Nigeria’s modernised e-visa rollout in 2025, the eVisa replaces earlier Visa-on-Arrival options and streamlines pre-travel checks via the official portal at evisa.immigration.gov.ng. The online system reduces paperwork and lets applicants upload supporting documents digitally.

Applicants complete the online application on the government portal or use DoVisa for guided completion, document checks, and optional add-ons like Denial Protection. After approval you receive an official eVisa confirmation to print or download — typically sent by email as a PDF that should be presented to immigration on arrival. Processing timelines vary by service level; expedited options are available for faster turnaround.

The eVisa is a visa — not a border guarantee — and final admission remains at the discretion of immigration officers at your point of entry. Recent policy changes in 2025 formalised the e-Visa platform and clarified that ECOWAS nationals remain visa-exempt; other travellers must hold an approved eVisa or a valid visa issued by a Nigerian mission. The eVisa does not remove other entry requirements such as valid passport validity and health/vaccination checks.

For comprehensive entry guidance see Nigeria visa information and the official portal at evisa.immigration.gov.ng. Ready to begin? Apply for your Nigeria eVisa now.

Nigeria Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and have enough blank pages for endorsement. See Nigeria Immigration Service for details.

Vaccination & Health

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required where applicable and CDC advises routine vaccines and malaria prophylaxis. Review current guidance on the CDC Nigeria page.

Customs & Prohibited Imports

Nigeria Customs publishes an Import Prohibition List — banned items include certain foodstuffs (pork and specified dairy/egg products), some pharmaceuticals and expired/substandard medicines. Check the full list at Nigeria Customs Service before travel.

Funds, Itinerary & Accommodation

You must show a confirmed return ticket, eVisa approval or valid visa, and evidence of accommodation or a host address. Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay; bring supporting documents.

Travel Insurance & Medical Advice

Travel insurance (including medical evacuation) is strongly recommended — medical facilities and medication availability can be limited in many areas. See the U.S. State Dept travel page for health and security advice: travel.state.gov — Nigeria.

Travel Tips for Nigeria Visitors

Nigeria is a large and diverse country with major international gateways in both the south and north. Abuja and Lagos are the primary arrival hubs; domestic travel can require long transit times between cities. Plan transfers and security-conscious itineraries in advance.

  • Currency: Nigerian Naira (NGN). Major hotels and international businesses commonly accept cards; carry some local currency for markets and taxis — USD may be accepted in limited tourist services.
  • Language: English is the official language; many regional languages are widely spoken.
  • Time zone: West Africa Time — GMT+1.
  • Safety: Follow travel advisories — avoid listed high-risk states and register your travel with your embassy if possible.
  • Best time to visit: November–March for drier weather in most regions; rainy season (April–October) can affect travel plans in some areas.
  • Transfers: Allow extra time for immigration and baggage checks at major international airports and for connections requiring land transfers.
  • Customs: Do not attempt to import prohibited agricultural or pharmaceutical items listed by Nigeria Customs; fines and seizure are enforced.
  • Health prep: Take malaria prophylaxis and ensure routine vaccinations are up to date before travel.
