What Is the Myanmar Tourist eVisa?

The Myanmar Tourist eVisa is an official electronic visa issued through the Republic of the Union of Myanmar’s eVisa portal. Introduced to streamline pre-travel visa processing, the online eVisa system lets eligible travelers apply, pay, and receive an approval letter by email — eliminating the need for an in-person embassy visit for many nationalities. The system has replaced cumbersome paper-only procedures for many short-stay tourists and is managed via the Ministry of Immigration and Population's official eVisa website.

To apply, use the official portal at evisa.moip.gov.mm or opt for guided completion with DoVisa for extra checks and support. After you submit passport data, a passport-style photo, and travel details, the immigration authority reviews your application and sends an approval letter by email. That approval letter is valid for entry for a limited period and must be printed or available on a mobile device to present to immigration officers on arrival. The portal accepts passport holders only — travel documents are not eligible.

The eVisa is a pre-travel visa authorization — it authorizes you to travel to Myanmar and present the approval letter at immigration for stamping into your passport. It does not guarantee entry; border officers make final admission decisions. Recent official guidance notes the approval letter is typically valid for 90 days from issue and permits a single-entry stay (the approved length of stay is 28 days for most tourist eVisas). The approval letter must be printed and presented on arrival at the allowed entry points listed by the government.

For full Myanmar entry rules see Myanmar visa information and the official portal at evisa.moip.gov.mm. When you're ready to begin, Apply for your Myanmar Tourist eVisa now.

Who Needs the Myanmar Tourist eVisa?

Who Needs It

  • Foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Myanmar and who are eligible to use the online eVisa service
  • Tourists planning a short, single-entry visit (tourism, sightseeing, family visits) staying up to the permitted 28 days
  • Children and minors — a parent or guardian completes the online application on the child’s behalf, with the child’s passport details

Who Is Exempt

  • Myanmar nationals (holders of Myanmar passports)
  • Airline and vessel crew members on active official duty
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders on government business
  • Nationals of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam (visa-exempt for limited stays at specific international airports)
  • Singapore (ordinary passport holders — visa-free for up to 30 days at designated checkpoints)

Myanmar Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and have at least one blank page. Only passports are accepted for eVisa applications — travel documents are not eligible.

Vaccination Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you’re arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Check the official guidance and the CDC travel page for the latest health advisories.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Myanmar prohibits certain imports including narcotics, pornographic material, counterfeit currency, arms and ammunition, and some religious artefacts. Personal goods may be subject to inspection and declaration — if in doubt consult the Myanmar Trade Portal for details.

Currency & Cash Declarations

Myanmar is largely cash-based and banking services can be disrupted. Carry sufficient currency and declare large sums of foreign currency to customs as required — expect limited ATM availability and strict inspection of high-denomination notes.

Travel Health & Insurance

Vaccinations such as Hepatitis A are recommended and cholera risk exists in some areas — consult the CDC traveller page. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended because healthcare facilities outside main cities are limited.

Restricted Goods & E-cigarettes

Recent trade and customs notices flag restrictions on certain imports and stricter controls on items like e-cigarettes and regulated goods — verify current bans before you travel with the Myanmar Trade Portal or Embassy guidance.

Travel Tips for Myanmar Visitors

Myanmar is a culturally rich country with major gateways at Yangon and Mandalay. Be mindful of local customs and the current security environment. Below are practical tips for tourists.

  • Currency: Myanmar Kyat (MMK). Cash is widely used; USD banknotes are sometimes accepted but bring clean, high-denomination bills as exchange can be limited.
  • Language: Burmese (Myanmar) is the official language; English is commonly spoken in hotels, tourist services, and major transport hubs.
  • Time zone: Myanmar Standard Time is GMT+6:30.
  • Main airports: Yangon International Airport (RGN) and Mandalay International Airport (MDL) are the principal international gateways; Nay Pyi Taw International Airport receives some international services as well.
  • Best time to visit: The cooler, drier season is typically November to February — plan ahead for popular sites like Bagan and Inle Lake.
  • Cash & cards: Many merchants require cash; credit cards may work in larger hotels but ATMs can be unreliable — carry sufficient cash for transfers and local purchases.
  • Respect local customs: Dress modestly at religious sites; remove shoes and hats in pagodas and when entering homes.
  • Safety: Monitor travel advisories and avoid restricted or conflict-affected regions; register with your embassy if you decide to travel.
