Japan Health Declaration
Complete your Japan Health Declaration through Visit Japan Web before travel — receive a QR code for faster immigration and customs processing.
What Is the Japan Health Declaration?
The Japan Health Declaration is the online health and customs pre-registration travellers use before arrival via the official Visit Japan Web platform. Introduced as part of Japan’s digital traveller services and unified 2D code system, Visit Japan Web replaced multiple separate arrival and customs apps and paper forms to speed up processing at immigration and customs counters.
You complete the declaration on the Visit Japan Web portal (services.digital.go.jp/visit-japan-web) or via authorised providers like DoVisa for guided completion. The form collects basic health and contact information, travel itinerary and customs declarations. After approval you receive a 2D/QR code (and an email confirmation) which you present at immigration e-gates and customs inspection points — this reduces manual data entry and can speed your arrival clearance.
This is a pre-arrival health & customs registration, not a visa or entry permit. It does not replace any visa requirement or certificate the Japanese immigration authorities may require for your nationality or purpose of travel. A key policy change: on January 25, 2024 Japan unified 2D codes for immigration and customs on Visit Japan Web, discontinuing the separate Customs Declaration app — use Visit Japan Web going forward for both immigration and customs declarations.
For full Japan entry rules see Japan visa information and the official Visit Japan Web guide at services.digital.go.jp. When you're ready, Apply for your Japan Health Declaration now.

Japan Entry Requirements & Restrictions
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. Japan does not require an additional period of post-arrival validity in most cases; bring a passport with a blank page for any visa stamp. See GOV.UK — Entry requirements.
COVID & Vaccination Rules
Japan no longer requires routine COVID-19 vaccination proof or pre-departure tests for entry — the COVID entry protocols were removed in 2023. For other vaccine advice consult official health guidance and TravelHealthPro or your embassy before travel.
Customs & Prohibited Items
Japan prohibits many controlled items including illegal narcotics, certain controlled medicines, weapons, and some meat products. Drones, some medications (e.g., containing controlled substances) and other restricted goods require prior permission. Use the electronic customs declaration on Visit Japan Web or check Japan Customs for item-level rules: Japan Customs — Declarations.
Bringing Medication
If you carry prescription medication, check Japan’s import controls — some commonly prescribed drugs abroad are regulated in Japan and may need prior permission. See guidance from the Ministry of Health and embassy pages before travel.
Travel Insurance & Health Monitoring
While travel insurance is not uniformly mandatory, private medical insurance is strongly recommended because medical costs can be high. Follow any health monitoring or reporting instructions provided via Visit Japan Web or by quarantine/immigration officials.
Travel Tips for Japan Visitors
Japan is an island nation with efficient air and sea links. Major international gateways include Narita International Airport, Tokyo Haneda Airport, Kansai International Airport (Osaka), Chubu Centrair International Airport (Nagoya), New Chitose (Sapporo), Fukuoka and Naha (Okinawa). After arrival use Visit Japan Web for immigration and customs pre-clearance to speed processing.
- Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY). Japan is still cash-friendly; ATMs at post offices and convenience stores accept many foreign cards. USD is sometimes accepted at tourist shops but carry JPY for everyday purchases.
- Language: Japanese is the official language; English signage and assistance are common at airports, major hotels and tourist sites but less so in rural areas.
- Time zone: Japan Standard Time (JST) — GMT+9, no daylight saving.
- Use Visit Japan Web: Complete the health & customs declaration before travel to obtain a QR/2D code for immigration e-gates and customs.
- Pack medication paperwork: Bring prescriptions and, for controlled drugs, obtain prior permission if required.
- Respect local rules: Avoid bringing prohibited foodstuffs (meat) and know etiquette: quiet public transport, remove shoes where required, and follow mask guidance when requested.
- Transport: Airport express trains and airport limousine buses connect major airports to city centres — book transfers in advance when possible.
