What Is the Japan Tourist Visa?
The Japan Tourist Visa is a short-term visitor visa for tourism, visiting friends or relatives, and short business activities that do not include paid work. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) administers visa policy and — in recent years — introduced an online eVISA option for eligible applicants to streamline applications that were previously handled only at diplomatic missions. The visa is issued by Japanese embassies, consulates, or via the official online eVISA system where available.
Apply through the official MOFA guidance pages (https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/) or use DoVisa for step-by-step support, document checks, and help preparing consulate-ready files. Depending on the consulate and applicant nationality, you may submit by appointment, mail, or through an accredited application centre; where eligible you can use the eVISA channel. After approval you either receive an email/notification from the issuing mission or return of your passport with the visa sticker; some eVISA-eligible applicants receive an electronic approval notice to present on arrival.
The Japan Tourist Visa is an entry visa — it is not a landing permission and does not guarantee admission. Immigration officers at arrival ports grant landing permission and determine the period of stay. Japan lifted most COVID-era entry restrictions in 2023 and expanded online options; consult MOFA for the latest changes and whether eVISA applies to your country of residence. The Japan Tourist Visa does not authorize work or long-term residence; those activities require separate visa types and pre-entry certificates.
For full entry rules see Japan visa information and the MOFA portal above. When you are ready, Apply now to begin your application with guided support.

Japan Entry Requirements & Restrictions
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. Japan does not generally require an additional six-month buffer — ensure you have at least one blank page for the visa or entry stamp. See MOFA guidance at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Vaccination & Health Advice
No routine vaccination is required for entry to Japan, but travellers should be up to date on routine vaccines. Review recommendations for measles, hepatitis A, and Japanese encephalitis on the CDC Japan traveller page.
Customs & Prohibited Items
Japan prohibits importing narcotics, firearms, explosives, counterfeit currency, obscene materials (including child pornography), and items infringing intellectual property rights. See the full prohibited list at Japan Customs.
Medication & Controlled Substances
Certain prescription medicines (narcotics, stimulants, psychotropics) require advance permission. If your medicine is controlled, apply to the Narcotics Control Department and allow at least 14 days before travel. Details: Narcotics Control Department.
Travel Insurance & Financial Proof
Travel insurance is strongly recommended. You should be prepared to show proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds for your stay at immigration — specific amounts are determined case-by-case by the admitting officer.
Travel Tips for Japan Visitors
Japan blends ultramodern cities with centuries-old culture. Most international arrivals land in the Tokyo area and continue by train, bus, domestic flight, or ferry to other regions.
- Airports: Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Narita International Airport (NRT) are the primary gateways; many other regional international airports serve major cities.
- Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY). Cash is common in shops and smaller towns; major tourist businesses accept cards. USD may be accepted at some duty-free or tourist services but is not widely accepted for everyday purchases.
- Language: Japanese is the official language; English is commonly spoken in hotels, major stations and tourist areas but less so in rural regions.
- Time zone: Japan Standard Time is GMT+9 (no daylight saving).
- Best time to visit: Spring (late March–May) for cherry blossom season and autumn (October–November) for fall colours.
- Cultural tips: Remove shoes where requested, queue carefully, and observe local etiquette on trains and in shrines.
- Transport: Trains are punctual — buy a rail pass or reserve seats for long-distance journeys in advance.
- Customs: Do not attempt to bring prohibited items; certain prescription drugs need prior permission — check official guidance before packing.
