What Is the India Embassy Visa?

The India Embassy Visa is the standard consular (paper/sticker) visa issued by Indian diplomatic missions and visa application centres for travel to India when an e-Visa or other online travel authorization is not appropriate. Regular embassy visas are used for a wide range of purposes — long-stay tourist, business, employment, student and other categories — and require submission of original supporting documents to an Indian Mission or an authorized Visa Application Centre (VFS) or the embassy consular counter.

Applications begin online through the Government of India portal and then proceed to submission of originals in person or via an application centre per the mission’s instructions. The diplomatic missions and the Indianvisaonline.gov.in platform coordinate the application workflow; DoVisa provides guided entry services including form completion, document checks and help booking an appointment at a designated Visa Application Centre. On approval you receive a stamped visa endorsed in your passport — typically returned by the mission or collected from the centre — along with confirmation of the visa category and validity dates.

The India Embassy Visa covers categories that cannot always be handled through the e-Visa channel and is issued by the Indian Mission (Embassy/Consulate) after document verification. It is not an automatic admission guarantee — entry is still decided by immigration officers at the port of entry and visa terms (validity, number of entries and permitted stay) depend on the visa category granted. For shorter visits, eligible nationalities may instead use the Government of India e-Visa service. Guidance on whether to apply for a regular embassy visa or an e-Visa is available on official sites and embassy pages.

India Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival and typically at least 2 blank pages for immigration stamping. See the official guidance at indianvisaonline.gov.in.

Vaccination Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever risk. The CDC lists country-specific vaccine guidance for India; routine vaccines (MMR, DTP, influenza) are recommended for travellers. See CDC — India travel health.

Customs & Prohibited Items

India restricts or prohibits certain imports including narcotics, protected wildlife products (ivory, certain timbers), counterfeit goods and other items subject to DGFT notifications. Recent trade notifications also list temporary restrictions on some jewellery imports. Check Indian Customs and DGFT notices before travel.

Registration & Local Rules

If you plan to stay more than 180 days (and are not an OCI cardholder), you may need to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival; hotels commonly help register short-stay visitors. See indianfrro.gov.in.

Travel Insurance & Medical Advice

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Medical services vary by region; ensure policy covers evacuation to major centres. Check CDC health notices for India before travel and take routine vaccinations as advised.

Travel Tips for India Visitors

India is a vast, diverse country with dozens of international gateways and varied climates. Major international airports include New Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International), Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Goa; multiple seaports and land border crossings also accept international arrivals — check the Indian visa portal for authorised entry points.

  • Best time to visit: October–March for most regions; monsoon season (June–September) affects western and southern coasts.

  • Language: Hindi is an official language; English is widely used for tourism, business and government interactions.
  • Time zone: India Standard Time is GMT+5:30.
  • Local customs: Dress modestly at religious sites and remove shoes where required. Learn basic greetings and follow temple/ mosque protocols.
  • Transport: Allow extra time for road travel; domestic flights connect major hubs. Book transfers in advance for early-morning departures.
  • Safety: Keep photocopies of travel documents, register long stays with FRRO, and follow local advisories for regional travel.
  • Payments: Credit cards work in cities; carry cash for smaller towns and markets.
