What Is the Bhutan eVisa?

The Bhutan eVisa is an electronic visa (e-permit) issued by Bhutan’s Department of Immigration (DOI) that authorises foreign nationals to enter the Kingdom for tourism, business, and short visits. The eVisa is processed through the government’s online portal (immi.gov.bt) and the Department of Immigration’s e-Permit/e-Visa pages, replacing older paper-based pre-clearance procedures and enabling applicants to receive formal visa clearance before travel.

Applications are submitted through the official DOI portal or via authorised providers like DoVisa for guided completion. Typical supporting documents include a clear passport copy, a recent passport-style photo, travel itinerary and accommodation evidence. On approval you receive an electronic visa clearance that must be printed or carried as a PDF to present to airlines at departure and immigration on arrival — Bhutan immigration guidance advises travellers to print the approval and present it at Paro International Airport (PBH).

The eVisa is the entry visa — when approved it permits arrival and issuance of a visa at the port of entry. Bhutan has recently expanded automated immigration clearance at Paro and select land checkpoints, speeding processing for travellers with electronic approvals. Note that some nationalities remain exempt from advance visa requirements; check the government portal for nationality-specific rules before booking travel.

Key facts: Validity 90 days, single entry, processed online at immi.gov.bt. See full Bhutan visa information and Apply for your Bhutan eVisa now.

Bhutan Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of arrival and at least one blank page for entry stamp. See the Department of Immigration (immi.gov.bt).

Vaccination & Health Advice

No vaccinations are mandatory for all travellers, but the CDC recommends routine vaccines and specific immunisations for rural travel (Hepatitis A, JE where relevant). Check the CDC Bhutan page before departure.

Customs Restrictions & Prohibited Items

Bhutan restricts and prohibits items including arms and ammunition, narcotics, and protected wildlife and antiques. Certain used goods, foodstuffs and agricultural products require permits. See the Customs Schedule of Annexures for full lists (CRRB Annexure).

Travel Insurance & Special Fees

Valid travel insurance is commonly required and recommended — the Department of Immigration lists insurance among supporting documents. Visitors are also subject to a per‑person sustainable development fee set by the Department of Tourism; verify fee and payment rules with your travel organiser or the MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Medication & Controlled Substances

Some medicines and medical products are controlled by the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority — carry prescriptions and check import rules before travel via the BFDA SPS portal (BFDA SPS), especially for controlled substances and medical devices.

Travel Tips for Bhutan Visitors

Bhutan sits in the eastern Himalaya; most international travellers arrive via Paro valley. Paro’s airport is high-altitude with limited daylight windows for landings — plan flights and transfers carefully.

  • Main international airport: Paro International Airport (PBH) — the primary gateway for international flights.
  • Land borders: Major entry points include Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar for road crossings; check permit/SDF rules if arriving by land.
  • Currency: Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN); Indian Rupee is widely accepted in border towns and many services — some hotels and tour operators also accept USD in major centres, but carry BTN for local purchases.
  • Language: Dzongkha is the official language; English is commonly used in hotels, government offices and with tour operators.
  • Time zone: Bhutan Time is GMT+6.
  • Best time to visit: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer clear skies and trekking-friendly weather.
  • Cultural tips: Dress modestly at dzongs and monasteries, remove shoes where requested, and always ask before photographing people or religious sites.
