What United Kingdom may ask for

Not every traveller is asked for all of these. A valid passport is checked every time; the rest is a spot check at the border, and some items belong to a visa application rather than the crossing itself.

  • Passport valid for entire duration of stay
  • Recent digital photo meeting UK visa specifications
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements, payslips)
  • Confirmed accommodation or host invitation letter
  • Return or onward flight booking confirmation
  • Supporting documents based on visa type

Electronic travel authorization may be required for Transit

Travelers transiting through the United Kingdom via Manchester Airport (MAN) or Heathrow Airport (LHR) who will not pass through border control (‘airside’ transit) do not require an ETA. Travelers required to pass through border control, such as when traveling on separate tickets or transferring between airports, must obtain an ETA to transit. Check the source for more details on transit exemptions. Travelers can submit an ETA application online. Once the application is approved, travelers receive their ETA confirmation electronically. An eTA is electronically linked to a passport and valid for up to 2 years for multiple entries. If travelers receive a new passport, they must apply for a new eTA.

    • The ETA requirement doesn't apply to: -Travelers with a valid visa; -Travelers with permission to live, work, or study in the United Kingdom (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode); -Travelers with valid British overseas territories citizen passports; -Travelers with valid British National (Overseas) passports; -Travelers who live in Ireland traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man; -Travelers aged 18 or under traveling as part of a group of five or more pupils on the France-UK school trip travel scheme. This doesn't apply to accompanying adults; -From August 1, 2026, travelers aged 19 or under traveling as part of a group of five or more pupils on the Germany-UK school trip travel scheme. This doesn't apply to accompanying adults; -Travelers transiting through the United Kingdom via Manchester Airport (MAN) or Heathrow Airport (LHR) who will not pass through border control ('airside' transit); -Travelers who are dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship. Dual citizens must prove their permission to travel using a valid British passport, valid Irish passport, or a certificate of entitlement. Under temporary guidance, an expired British passport issued in 1989 or later, accompanied by a valid ETA-eligible passport with matching personal details, may also be accepted at carrier discretion. Travelers intending to travel on an expired British passport should confirm acceptance with their carrier before travel.
