Suriname civil registration is administered by the Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken (CBB), the Central Bureau for Civil Registry headquartered in Paramaribo. The CBB maintains the bevolkingsregister (population register) and issues certified copies of vital civil status documents including the geboorteakte (birth certificate), huwelijksakte (marriage certificate), echtscheidingsakte (divorce decree), and overlijdensakte (death certificate).
The Surinamese civil registration system has its roots in the Dutch colonial era and continues to operate primarily in Dutch, making Dutch the dominant language for all official civil documents. Virtually all civil registry documents originating in Suriname therefore require Dutch-to-English or Dutch-to-Spanish translation for use in major immigration destinations including the United States, Canada, and Spain.
A distinctive feature of Surinamese civil documents is the variety of naming conventions reflecting the country multicultural population. Documents may contain Surinamese Creole (Afro-Surinamese), Hindustani (Indo-Surinamese), Javanese (Javanese-Surinamese), Maroon, and Amerindian names alongside Dutch-format document templates. Translators must be familiar with these cultural naming conventions to ensure accurate translations that pass immigration scrutiny.
When requesting documents from the CBB for international use, applicants should obtain certified copies (gewaarmerkte afschriften) directly from the CBB, as notarially certified copies or apostilled copies are typically required by foreign authorities.
