Traveling to Canada and want to breeze through customs? The Advance CBSA Declaration is your ticket to a faster border experience. This innovative digital system allows you to complete your customs and immigration declaration up to 72 hours before arriving in Canada, letting you skip the busy primary inspection kiosks and proceed directly to verification. Whether you're visiting Toronto for business, exploring Vancouver's natural beauty, or experiencing Montreal's vibrant culture, completing your declaration in advance means more time enjoying Canada and less time waiting in line.
What is the Advance CBSA Declaration?
The Advance CBSA Declaration is a digital customs and immigration form managed by the Canada Border Services Agency. It allows travelers to submit their declaration information electronically before arriving in Canada, replacing the traditional kiosk process at airports.
When you arrive at participating Canadian airports without an advance declaration, you must use the Primary Inspection Kiosks (PIK) to answer customs questions, scan your passport, and take a photo. During peak travel times, these kiosk lines can stretch to 30 minutes or more. With the Advance Declaration, you've already provided this information online—so you bypass the kiosks entirely and proceed directly to a CBSA officer for quick verification.
The system is part of Canada's ongoing modernization of border services, designed to improve the traveler experience while maintaining robust security standards. Your advance declaration is securely linked to your travel documents and retrieved automatically when you arrive.

Who Can Use the Advance CBSA Declaration?
The Advance CBSA Declaration is available to virtually all travelers arriving in Canada by air. Understanding who can use this system helps you prepare for a smoother border crossing.
- All nationalities welcome: Citizens of any country can submit an Advance Declaration regardless of visa status
- eTA holders: If you have a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization, you can (and should) complete the Advance Declaration
- Visa holders: Travelers with Canadian visitor visas benefit from the advance declaration
- Canadian citizens: Even Canadians returning home can use the system for faster processing

- Families and groups: One person can submit a declaration covering all family members traveling together
- Business travelers: Frequent visitors to Canada particularly benefit from the time savings
Remember: This is NOT Your Visa
The Advance CBSA Declaration is separate from your eTA or visa. It's the digital customs form—the equivalent of what you'd complete at the kiosk. You still need valid travel authorization (eTA for visa-exempt nationals, or a visa) to enter Canada.
Requirements for Advance CBSA Declaration
Before completing your Advance CBSA Declaration, make sure you have all the necessary information ready. Having these details at hand makes the process quick and ensures accuracy.
- Valid passport: Your passport must be valid for your entire stay in Canada
- Passport details: Passport number, issue date, expiry date, and issuing country
- Personal information: Full name exactly as it appears in your passport, date of birth, citizenship
- Flight information: Airline name, flight number, departure city, and arrival airport in Canada
- Canadian address: Complete address where you'll be staying (hotel, Airbnb, or host's home)
- Contact details: Phone number and email address
- Customs declarations: Information about goods you're bringing (currency over $10,000 CAD, commercial goods, restricted items)
- Travel companions: Details for any family members included in your declaration
- eTA or visa details: Your travel authorization information (if applicable)
- Purpose of visit: Tourism, business, visiting family, transit, etc.
- Previous visits: Any prior travel to Canada
Customs Honesty is Critical
Always declare items accurately. Failing to declare restricted goods, excessive currency, or commercial items can result in fines, seizure, and denial of entry. When in doubt, declare it—CBSA officers appreciate honesty.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid These Declaration Errors
Small mistakes can cause delays or require you to use the kiosk anyway. Here are the most common errors and how to prevent them:
- Name mismatches: Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport—including middle names, hyphens, and special characters
- Wrong arrival date: If your flight crosses midnight, enter the date you land in Canada, not your departure date
- Incomplete address: Provide the full address including street number, city, province, and postal code
- Forgetting family members: All travelers in your group must be included—don't forget infants
- Submitting too early: Declarations expire after 72 hours. Don't submit too far in advance
- Submitting too late: Complete at least a few hours before your flight in case of technical issues
- Not saving confirmation: Screenshot or print your receipt—you may need to show it
- Under-declaring goods: Always declare items honestly to avoid penalties

This saved SO much time at Toronto Pearson! Usually the kiosk lines are 30+ minutes. Walked right through with my advance declaration.
Tip: Complete this AND get your eTA before you fly. Two different things but both help speed up entry!
Did mine for the whole family on one form. So much easier than everyone filling out separate kiosk forms at 6am after a red-eye!
Just flew into Vancouver - the advance declaration lane moved about 4x faster than the regular kiosk line. Totally worth the 5 minutes it took to complete.
Confused this with the eTA at first. They're SEPARATE things - eTA is your permission to enter, this declaration is your customs form. Need both!
Business traveler tip: If you visit Canada often, you should also look into NEXUS. But the advance declaration is great for occasional visits.
Flying into Montreal next week. Just completed the declaration in both languages (it has French too). Very easy process through DoVisa!
Remember to save your confirmation! I showed mine on my phone to the CBSA officer and was through in under 5 minutes. Best travel hack for Canada.
Filled this out the night before our flight from Seoul. Our whole family of 4 on one form - made our connection in Toronto so much less stressful!
I love that this is free. No service fee for something that saves serious time. Canada doing it right!
The 72-hour window caught me out - I filled it 4 days early and it expired. Had to do it again. Complete it 1-2 days before!
Traveled from UK to Calgary. Between my eTA and advance declaration, the whole entry process took maybe 10 minutes. Very impressed.
