What Is the Yemen Tourist Visa?

The Yemen Tourist Visa is a consular entry visa issued by Yemeni diplomatic missions after an internal authorization from the Immigration, Nationality and Passport Authority (Ministry of Interior). Yemen stopped issuing entry visas on arrival in 2010 — visitors must obtain pre-authorization and have a visa affixed in their passport at a Yemeni embassy or consulate before travel. Many missions require an invitation or sponsorship from a Yemeni host, a licensed travel agent, or an authorised organisation before they will forward an authorization request to authorities in Yemen.

Applications are normally submitted via the consular channel of the relevant Yemeni embassy or consulate (for example the embassy pages at yemenembassy.org or the consulate guidance at yemenconsulate.de). Some private portals advertise e‑visa-style pre-authorisations, but the official route requires embassy submission and Immigration Authority approval. Once the embassy issues the visa, your passport is returned with a visa sticker or stamp — allow time for courier return or in-person collection.

The visa is an entry permit placed in your passport; it is not a travel advisory or safety clearance. Recent consular notices show that many missions have placed routine tourist processing on hold or limited issuance to specific categories (returning nationals, humanitarian or diplomatic travel) — check the issuing embassy before booking. The Yemen Tourist Visa does not remove entry screening: immigration officers make the final decision at ports of entry and you must still meet passport, registration and health checks upon arrival.

Yemen Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival. The visa is affixed in your passport by the issuing mission — carry the same passport when you travel.

Vaccination & Health Advice

There are no mandatory vaccinations required for entry per official travel advice, but the CDC advises routine immunizations and notes cholera is present — consider cholera and hepatitis vaccines if visiting high‑risk areas. See the CDC Yemen page for current guidance: CDC — Yemen.

Currency & Customs Rules

Import or export of local currency may be restricted and is effectively illegal in some cases. There are no limits on bringing foreign currency into Yemen but amounts above 3,000 US dollars must be declared. Use official guidance at GOV.UK — Yemen entry requirements.

Security & Registration

If you remain in Yemen more than 14 days you must register your passport with Yemeni immigration authorities after arrival. Expect security screening and possible movement restrictions; check the latest travel advisories before travel.

Travel Insurance & Medical

Medical facilities are limited in many parts of Yemen; comprehensive travel insurance and evacuation coverage are strongly recommended. Some consulates request a medical fitness certificate for visa applications.

Travel Tips for Yemen Visitors

Yemen is geographically diverse with ancient cities, coastal ports and the island of Socotra. Air access and port operations can change quickly due to the security situation — plan conservatively and confirm logistics with official sources.

  • Currency: Yemeni Rial (YER). US dollars are the most easily convertible currency in many places; declare amounts over 3,000 US dollars.
  • Language: Arabic is the official language; limited English is spoken in embassies, larger hotels and by some guides.
  • Time zone: Yemen Standard Time is GMT+3.
  • Airports: Primary international airports include Sana'a International Airport (SAH), Aden International Airport (ADE), Seiyun Hadhramaut (GXF), and Riyan/Mukalla (RIY) — check operational status before travel.
  • Safety first: The Canadian, UK and US governments advise against travel to Yemen — monitor official advisories and register with your embassy if travel is unavoidable.
  • Local rules: Follow local laws and customs; avoid photographing security or military installations and carry identification at all times.
  • Transport: Domestic routes and ports may be disrupted; arrange transfers through trusted, licensed operators and confirm schedules.
