What Is the British Virgin Islands ED Card?

The British Virgin Islands ED Card is the official online Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) card and immigration declaration introduced to modernize arrival processing in the Territory. Launched as a digital replacement for paper embarkation cards, the online ED Card is administered via the BVI Online Immigration & Customs Portal and is required for most international arrivals to streamline passport control and customs checks.

Apply through the official portal at bviedcard.gov.vg or use DoVisa for guided completion, document checks, and faster processing options. On approval you receive an email confirmation with a PDF and a transaction/confirmation record — many travellers receive a QR-enabled confirmation to present to immigration officers on arrival. Typical DoVisa processing options include Standard (24h), Rush (4h) and Super Rush (30 min) to match last-minute itineraries.

The ED Card is a pre-arrival embarkation/declaration — it does not by itself grant a visa where a visa is otherwise required. Immigration officers at the port of entry make the final admission decision based on your passport, return/onward ticket, accommodation details and the ED Card data. From 01 January 2025 the British Virgin Islands moved to the mandatory online ED Card system for arrivals, phasing out handwritten embarkation cards collected on flights and at ports of entry.

Key facts: valid for single-entry stays up to 30 days; complete the form before travel and keep the confirmation accessible. Review Virgin Islands, British visa information and the official portal at bviedcard.gov.vg. Apply now to start your ED Card application with expert support.

British Virgin Islands Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport & Arrival Requirements

Your passport must be valid on arrival and have at least one blank page for stamping. Airlines often require a passport that is valid for the duration of your stay — check with your carrier and the official guidance at U.S. State Dept..

Vaccination Advice

No routine vaccinations are mandatory for entry. A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. See the CDC traveller page for the British Virgin Islands: CDC — British Virgin Islands.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Certain foodstuffs (including fresh meat products) are prohibited unless approved, pets require import permits, and firearms or explosives need special licences. Review the Customs Management and Duties Act and official lists before travel: CMDA (PDF).

Travel Insurance & Health

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Medical facilities are limited outside Tortola — serious cases may require evacuation to specialist facilities. Carry prescriptions with their original labels and supporting documentation.

Proof of Itinerary & Funds

Be prepared to show a confirmed return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation. Immigration officers may request evidence of means to support your stay — bring bank cards or booking confirmations.

Travel Tips for Virgin Islands, British Visitors

The British Virgin Islands are a compact chain of islands famous for sailing, diving and secluded beaches. Most international travellers arrive at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Beef Island/Tortola; other airfields include Anegada (NGD) and Virgin Gorda (VIJ). Sea arrivals are common — check your ferry or private-boat transfer schedule.

  • Currency: United States Dollar (USD) — USD is widely accepted across the islands.
  • Language: English is the official language and is universally used for immigration and tourism services.
  • Time zone: Atlantic Standard Time — GMT-4, no daylight saving.
  • Best time to visit: December–April for calmer seas and sunshine; hurricane season runs June–November so check forecasts.
  • Plan boat transfers in advance — inter-island ferries and charters run on set timetables.
  • Respect local rules on biosecurity — fresh meats and certain produce are restricted; bring required permits for pets.
  • Save your ED Card confirmation offline — remote islands may have limited mobile data on arrival.
  • Dress casually but respectfully on inhabited islands; resort beaches are more relaxed.
