What Is the United Kingdom Ukraine Family Scheme Visa?

The United Kingdom Ukraine Family Scheme Visa was a Home Office immigration route that allowed eligible Ukrainian nationals and specified family members to join relatives or sponsors in the UK. Introduced in 2022 as part of the UK’s response to the humanitarian crisis, the scheme provided permission to live, work and study in the UK for successful applicants. The Family Scheme operated alongside later Ukraine routes and in many cases required biometric enrolment at a UKVCAS or a visa application centre before travel.

Applications were submitted via the official GOV.UK guidance pages (Apply for a Ukraine Family Scheme visa — GOV.UK) and processed by UK Visas and Immigration. If you applied from outside the UK and your application was approved you would normally collect a visa vignette from the visa application centre; applicants who applied from inside the UK were later given access to an eVisa account to view and prove their immigration permissions after arrival.

The United Kingdom Ukraine Family Scheme Visa is a UK entry visa — it does not replace the need for a valid travel document or airline checks prior to boarding. Important policy changes: the Ukraine Family Scheme closed to new applications at 15:00 on 19 February 2024; separate extension routes (Ukraine Permission Extension) opened on 4 February 2025 for those already granted leave. Always check GOV.UK for the current scheme status before applying.

United Kingdom Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport & Biometric Requirements

You must travel on the same passport used in your application. Applicants are required to provide biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph) at a UKVCAS or visa application centre; if applying from outside the UK you normally collect your visa vignette at the VAC. See UKVCAS — GOV.UK.

Vaccination & Health Advice

No routine vaccinations are mandatory to enter the UK. Keep routine immunisations up to date and review travel health advice for the UK on the CDC UK page; bring proof of any specialist or yellow fever vaccinations if travelling from a risk country.

Customs & Prohibited Items

The UK has strict rules on goods: controlled drugs, firearms, certain food (meat/dairy restrictions), and some plants/animals are restricted or banned. Check GOV.UK’s list of prohibited and restricted imports before you travel: Prohibited and restricted goods — GOV.UK.

Funds, Accommodation & Travel

You should be able to show a valid travel document, evidence of your relationship or sponsorship where requested, appropriate accommodation details and that you meet any conditions in your decision email or vignette. Bring any supporting documents requested at the visa stage.

Travel Insurance & Healthcare

While the scheme permitted access to services, applicants should arrange travel insurance for their journey; NHS entitlement depends on immigration status — check your post-arrival eVisa guidance to confirm healthcare access and registrations.

Travel Tips for United Kingdom Visitors

The UK comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Major international airports accepting inbound travellers include Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham (BHX), Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol (BRS), Aberdeen (ABZ) and Belfast (BFS). Ports and ferry terminals are also official entry points; check your route.

  • Currency: Pound Sterling (GBP). Cards are widely accepted; carry some GBP cash for small purchases — USD is not widely accepted for everyday purchases.
  • Language: English is the primary language; Welsh and Scots Gaelic are regionally used. English is sufficient for immigration and official processes.
  • Time zone: United Kingdom uses GMT (UTC+0) in winter and British Summer Time BST (UTC+1) in summer.
  • Bring documents: Keep your visa decision email, eVisa share code or vignette details, passport, and sponsor contact details handy for immigration checks.
  • Biometric appointments: Book and attend any required UKVCAS or VAC appointments early — missing them delays your visa collection.
  • Customs: Don’t bring restricted meat/dairy or controlled items; declare goods when required to avoid fines or seizure.
  • Transport: Trains and domestic flights link major airports — allow extra time for immigration and baggage checks after arrival.
