What Is the Saudi Arabia ETA for UK Passport Holders?

The Saudi Arabia ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry permission issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its national visa platform, ksavisa.sa. It launched on 1 July 2026 and is open to all categories of British passport holders — introduced alongside the United Kingdom's own ETA scheme, which Saudi nationals now need to visit Britain. It is issued electronically and linked to your passport: there is no embassy appointment, no interview and no sticker in your passport.

The Saudi Arabia ETA is valid for 730 days (2 years) from the date of issue, allows multiple entries, and permits a cumulative stay of 180 days across that two-year period. It covers tourism, business, short-term study and medical treatment, and it also covers Umrah performed outside the Hajj season. It does not cover employment, residence or Hajj, each of which uses a separate visa route. One practical difference worth knowing: an ETA does not include health insurance, whereas Saudi Arabia's tourist e-Visa does.

British travellers will still see other options listed — the tourist e-Visa and the older Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) both remain on the UK government's Saudi Arabia entry requirements page — but the ETA is the route Saudi Arabia built specifically for UK passports and is the current recommended choice for British travellers. DoVisa prepares, checks and submits your Saudi Arabia ETA for one all-in price with the government fee included — no add-ons at checkout. There is no live selfie, no facial scan and no passport chip read — you simply upload a passport-style photo. You must be outside Saudi Arabia when you apply. Travellers on non-UK passports should use the Saudi Arabia Tourist eVisa instead.

Who Can Apply for the Saudi Arabia ETA?

Who Needs It

  • You hold a British passport — all categories of UK passport are eligible under the scheme that opened on 1 July 2026
  • You are travelling for tourism, business, short-term study or medical treatment
  • You are travelling for Umrah outside the Hajj season — the ETA covers this
  • You are outside Saudi Arabia at the time you apply — the ETA cannot be applied for from inside the Kingdom
  • You are applying for a child or minor as their parent or guardian — every traveller needs their own ETA on their own passport

Who Is Exempt

  • Travelling for employment or residence — these require a separate Saudi work or residence visa
  • Travelling for Hajj — Hajj pilgrims must use the dedicated Hajj visa route, not an ETA
  • Holding a non-UK passport — use the Saudi Arabia Tourist eVisa instead, which is open to a much wider range of nationalities

Saudi Arabia Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your UK passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Saudi Arabia — some carriers advise leaving 8 months to be safe. Your ETA is tied to the passport you apply with: renew the passport and you will need a new ETA.

Photo and Application Details

You need a digital passport-style photograph (uploaded as a file — no live face capture, no selfie step and no NFC chip read), your passport biodata exactly as printed, contact details, and your travel and accommodation details.

Apply Before You Fly, From Outside the Kingdom

The ETA cannot be obtained on arrival. You must apply online before travel, and you must be outside Saudi Arabia when you apply.

Vaccination Certificates

A yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from a listed transmission-risk country. A meningococcal (ACWY) certificate is mandatory for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — administered at least 10 days before arrival and still within validity.

Customs and Prohibited Items

Saudi Arabia prohibits importing alcohol, pork products, narcotics, pornographic material and weapons. Satellite phones, radio transmitters, recording devices and powerful cameras or binoculars require a licence; books and electronic devices may be examined at the border.

Health Insurance Is Not Included

Unlike Saudi Arabia's tourist e-Visa, which carries cover of up to SAR 100,000, the ETA includes no health insurance. Arrange your own travel and medical cover before you go.

Travel Tips for Saudi Arabia Visitors

Main international gateways are Riyadh (RUH), Jeddah (JED), Dammam (DMM) and Medina (MED). The most comfortable travel window is November to March — summer heat in Riyadh and the interior is severe.

  • Make sure you are buying the right document: four similarly named products exist in this corridor. The Saudi Arabia ETA (this page) is for UK passport holders; the Saudi tourist e-Visa is the route for other nationalities and includes health insurance; the older Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) is the single-entry route GOV.UK still lists; and the UK's own ETA is a separate British scheme for Saudi nationals visiting Britain — nothing to do with travelling to the Kingdom.
  • Apply before you book anything non-refundable: there is no published guaranteed turnaround, with reported processing running from under 24 working hours to around three working days — and the scheme is only weeks old, so procedures can still shift.
  • Get the photograph right the first time: photo problems are the most common cause of delay. Use a recent passport-style photo — plain light background, full face visible, sharp focus, no filters, not cropped from a group shot. There is no live-capture step to fall back on.
  • Track your 180 days — they are cumulative, not per trip: the allowance is a total across the whole two years, not a fresh allowance on each entry. If you visit often, keep a running count.
  • Practical ground rules: the Saudi riyal is pegged at a fixed 3.75 SAR to 1 USD, so prices convert predictably; Arabic is the official language with English widely used in business and hotels; the country runs on UTC+3 year-round. Alcohol cannot be brought into the country under any circumstances.
  • Keep your approval accessible offline: save the ETA confirmation to your phone and carry a printed copy — airline check-in staff and immigration officers may ask for it.
