What Is the Rwanda Conference eVisa?

The Rwanda Conference eVisa (officially known as Visa Type V5) is an electronic travel authorization issued by the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE). It is required for all foreign nationals planning to attend conferences, workshops, seminars, or business meetings in Rwanda. This eVisa can be obtained entirely online through the official Irembo government portal (irembo.gov.rw) without needing to visit an embassy, streamlining the process for international delegates.

The Rwanda Conference eVisa is a single-entry permit granting a stay of up to 30 days. You'll need to provide your passport details, a recent photo, a copy of the conference invitation letter, and your travel itinerary. Once approved, you will receive an electronic visa letter via email, which you must print and present along with your passport to immigration officers upon arrival at any Rwandan port of entry. The official visa fee for most nationalities is 50 USD, though it is free for citizens of East African Community countries and several other African nations.

This eVisa is distinct from a work permit and does not authorize employment or long-term residency. A key policy to note is that Rwanda has offered visas on arrival to all nationalities since January 2018, but applying online in advance is strongly recommended for conference attendees to avoid delays and ensure seamless entry. The online application allows for pre-verification and faster processing, giving you certainty before your trip.

For broader entry rules and other visa types, see Rwanda visa information. To start your application with document checks and support, use the Irembo portal or apply for your Rwanda Conference eVisa now through DoVisa.

Travel Tips for Rwanda Visitors

Rwanda, known as the 'Land of a Thousand Hills', is a small, landlocked country in East Africa famous for its mountain gorillas, clean cities, and vibrant culture. Most international visitors arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL), the main gateway. Kamembe International Airport (KME) in the west also handles some regional flights.

  • Best time for conferences: The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer pleasant weather for travel and outdoor events.
  • Currency: The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted in major hotels and businesses, but smaller vendors prefer RWF.
  • Language: The official languages are Kinyarwanda, English, French, and Swahili. English is commonly used in business and tourist areas.
  • Time zone: Rwanda is on Central Africa Time (GMT+2) and does not observe daylight saving.
  • Getting around: Use registered taxi services or ride-hailing apps like Yego Cab in Kigali. Mototaxis (boda-bodas) are common but ensure you wear a helmet.
  • Dress code: Business attire is expected for conferences. When visiting religious sites or rural areas, modest clothing is recommended.
  • Safety: Kigali is one of Africa's safest capitals, but remain vigilant with belongings in crowded areas.
  • Gorilla trekking add-on: If your schedule allows, booking a gorilla permit in Volcanoes National Park requires advance planning—often months ahead.
  • Power outlets: Type C (European two-pin) and Type G (UK three-pin) outlets are used. Bring a universal adapter.
