What Is the Qatar ETA?

The Qatar ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is an online clearance travelers can obtain before travel to Qatar that speeds up immigration processing. Issued via Qatar's official visa platforms — primarily the Ministry of Interior visa portal and the Hayya system for certain visitor categories — the ETA modernizes what used to require embassy visits or ad hoc arrival processing.

Applications are submitted through the Ministry of Interior portal (portal.moi.gov.qa/qatarvisas) or Hayya (hayya.qa), and DoVisa provides a guided application experience with document checks and support. On approval you receive an electronic authorization by email (PDF/approval notice) that airlines and border officers accept; keep the email and any reference/approval number on your phone for check-in and arrival immigration.

The ETA is an entry authorization and not a residence permit — immigration officers at the border determine final admission. Qatar's online ETA program complements existing visa-waiver and e-visa pathways and has made pre-arrival authorization routine for many nationalities. It does not replace health screening, required insurance, or any entry checks that the Ministry of Interior may perform on arrival.

Who Needs the Qatar ETA?

Who Needs It

  • Foreign nationals who require pre-travel electronic authorization to board for travel to Qatar
  • Visitors travelling for tourism, business or transit who are not visa-exempt at arrival
  • Children and minors (a parent or guardian completes the application on their behalf)

Who Is Exempt

  • Qatari nationals
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders on government business
  • Airline and vessel crew on active official duty
  • Transit passengers who remain airside and do not clear Qatari immigration

Qatar Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must meet Qatar's minimum validity — most official guidance specifies at least 3 months remaining from the date of arrival. Carry the passport used for your ETA application.

Proof of Itinerary & Accommodation

You may be asked to show a confirmed return or onward ticket and a hotel or host confirmation — keep booking references handy for check-in and immigration.

Health Insurance & Vaccinations

A valid health insurance policy from a company registered with Qatar's Ministry of Public Health is commonly required. No routine vaccinations are mandatory for entry per official traveller health guidance, but check the CDC Qatar page for updates.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Qatar bans or tightly restricts items including narcotics, weapons/ammunition, and immoral/pornographic material. Certain items — like alcohol and some media — are restricted and may require diplomatic clearance. See the General Authority of Customs list at customs.gov.qa.

E‑cigarettes, Drones & Medication

Import rules can apply to e‑cigarettes and vaping devices and to drones or prescription medicines — check the customs list and bring prescriptions where relevant to avoid seizure.

Travel Tips for Qatar Visitors

Qatar is a modern Gulf state centered on Doha and Hamad International Airport (DOH). Prepare for high temperatures in summer and a busy events calendar in winter.

  • Currency: Qatari Riyal (QAR). Major hotels and some tourist businesses accept USD, but carry QAR for local purchases.
  • Language: Arabic is the official language; English is widely spoken across hotels, services and airports.
  • Time zone: Qatar Standard Time is GMT+3.
  • Main airport: Hamad International Airport (DOH) handles most international arrivals — allow time for transfers and immigration.
  • Dress & conduct: Dress conservatively in public and respect local customs, especially during Ramadan.
  • Transport: Taxis and app-based rides are common in Doha; plan airport transfers ahead for late arrivals.
  • Connectivity: Buy a local SIM at the airport for easy navigation and communication.
  • Keep documents handy: Save your ETA approval email offline and have booking references ready for check-in and immigration.
