New Zealand Traveller Declaration
Complete your New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) online — free, official, and checked before you arrive to speed border processing.
What Is the New Zealand Traveller Declaration?
The New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) is the official digital arrival card that every person travelling into New Zealand must complete before they arrive. Introduced in August 2023 to replace the paper passenger arrival card, the NZTD collects travel, immigration, biosecurity and customs information that helps border agencies assess risk and direct inspections. The system is free and available as a web form and a mobile app.
You complete the declaration at the official portal (travellerdeclaration.govt.nz) or via DoVisa for guided completion. On approval the declaration is linked to your passport record and used by eGate systems or border officers — you do not receive a visa from the declaration, but you will have an electronic record immigration and biosecurity officers can access. Save a screenshot or note your confirmation details; the declaration is checked at the border.
The declaration is separate from any visa or NZeTA requirement and does not grant entry by itself. Immigration New Zealand, New Zealand Customs Service and the Ministry for Primary Industries use the information together during arrival clearance. DoVisa can help you complete the declaration correctly and review biosecurity answers before travel.
For full entry rules see New Zealand visa information and the official NZTD portal at travellerdeclaration.govt.nz. When you’re ready to complete your declaration with step‑by‑step help, Apply now.

New Zealand Entry Requirements & Restrictions
Passport & Travel Documents
You must hold a valid passport and any required visa or NZeTA before travelling. Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket and evidence of funds — check your eligibility on Immigration New Zealand.
Biosecurity & Prohibited Items
New Zealand has strict biosecurity controls — declare all food, plants, seeds, honey, and animal products. Many fresh fruits, vegetables and soil are prohibited; undeclared items can lead to fines and inspection. See What you can and cannot bring into New Zealand.
Vaccination & Health Information
No routine vaccinations are required for entry. Check routine travel immunisations and CDC guidance before travel; all travellers should be up to date with MMR and other routine vaccines. See the CDC New Zealand page: CDC — New Zealand.
Tobacco, Alcohol & Medicines
There are limits on duty‑free tobacco and alcohol allowances; bringing in larger quantities may incur GST and duty. Prescription medicines and some controlled drugs have rules — carry prescriptions and check New Zealand Customs guidance at New Zealand Customs Service.
Travel Insurance & Practical Advice
Travel insurance is recommended — medical care and emergency evacuation can be costly in remote areas. The declaration helps border agencies direct you to the correct arrivals lane but is not a substitute for travel insurance.
Travel Tips for New Zealand Visitors
New Zealand (Aotearoa) is an island nation with strict border controls to protect its environment and agriculture. Most international visitors arrive through major gateways; plan transfers and declare any items that may be biosecurity risks.
- Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD). US dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist areas but NZD is preferred at shops and transport hubs.
- Language: English and te reo Māori are official; English is widely spoken nationwide.
- Time zone: NZST is GMT+12; NZDT (daylight saving) is GMT+13 when in effect.
- Main airports: Auckland International Airport (AKL) and Christchurch International Airport (CHC) are primary international gateways — check your flight arrival terminal.
- Biosecurity first: If in doubt about food, plants or animal products, declare them on your NZTD — undeclared items risk fines.
- Connectivity: Mobile coverage is excellent in cities but limited in remote national parks; download maps and e‑tickets before you go.
- Respect local customs: Māori culture is central to New Zealand identity — observe signage at wāhi tapu (sacred sites) and follow local guidance.
- Transport: Domestic connections are by air and road; if you plan to drive, check local licence and road rules in advance.
