Q: Do I need an ETIAS to visit Lithuania now?

No. ETIAS is not in operation, the EU is not accepting applications, and no traveller holds a valid one. If you are visa-exempt you enter Lithuania on your passport as before and register with the Entry/Exit System at the border. Any website offering to sell you a working Lithuania ETIAS today cannot supply one, because the EU system that issues them has not opened.

Q: Will an ETIAS cover the whole Curonian Spit?

It will cover the Lithuanian part. The spit is divided: the northern half sits in Lithuania and the southern half in the Russian Kaliningrad Region, with an external EU border running across it. An ETIAS will let you visit Nida, Juodkrantė and the Lithuanian dunes, usually via the ferry from Klaipėda, but it gives you no right to continue into the Russian section.

Q: Will one ETIAS cover Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia?

Yes. A single authorisation will be valid across all 30 participating countries, and the borders between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are internal Schengen borders with no routine checks. Your time does not multiply, though. The 90 days in any 180-day period is one shared balance for the whole area, so a three-country Baltic trip spends exactly the same allowance as staying in Vilnius.

Q: Does an ETIAS guarantee I will be admitted to Lithuania?

No. ETIAS will authorise travel to the border, not passage through it. An officer of the State Border Guard Service still inspects your passport, asks about the purpose and length of your visit, and may ask to see accommodation details, an onward ticket or proof of funds. Entry can be refused even when the authorisation is valid, on the same grounds that apply today.

ETIAS at Lithuania's Airports and Land Borders

Lithuania will be covered by the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, the EU-wide requirement for visa-exempt short-stay visitors to 30 European countries. The system is not yet running. No applications are being collected anywhere, and the European Commission says it will give notice of the specific start date several months before launch. Until that happens, entering Lithuania works exactly as it does today.

Lithuania's border situation is more varied than most countries in the scheme. It has internal Schengen land borders with Latvia and Poland, and external EU borders with Belarus and with the Russian Kaliningrad Region. The land route between the rest of the Schengen area and the Baltic states runs across the Lithuanian-Polish border, which makes Lithuania the road and rail gateway to the whole region. The State Border Guard Service, under the Ministry of the Interior, runs all of these crossings, and it has operated the EU Entry/Exit System since that system was first switched on at Vilnius Airport in October 2025.

ETIAS will be an authorisation, not a visa. It will last three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes sooner, and will permit multiple entries for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the covered area. It will not guarantee admission. That decision stays with the officer at the border.

Border Checks on Arrival in Lithuania

Passport issued within the last 10 years

Your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years on the day you arrive, and must remain valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Both rules are applied together, so a passport can meet one and fail the other. The combination is set out in the UK government's Lithuania entry requirements.

Entry/Exit System registration

The State Border Guard Service, Lithuania's border authority under the Ministry of the Interior, operates the EU Entry/Exit System. It went live at Vilnius Airport first, then the other airports, the seaport and the land crossings. Instead of a passport stamp, your document data, facial image and fingerprints are recorded. The authority is listed on the EU's register of national border authorities, and the rollout was reported by Lithuania's national public broadcaster.

Belarus and Kaliningrad are external EU borders

Lithuania's crossings with Belarus and with the Russian Kaliningrad Region are external EU frontiers. The Belarus border has been closed and reopened more than once in recent years, and individual crossings such as Medininkai and Šalčininkai have operated under changing restrictions. Separate rules also limit Russian-registered vehicles transiting to and from Kaliningrad. Purpose of travel, funds and onward tickets

A border officer may ask for proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, travel insurance and evidence that you can support yourself during the stay. ETIAS will not remove these questions. The authorisation is checked before you board, while the entry decision is taken at the border itself. The EU explains that division on its official ETIAS portal.

One shared 90-day allowance

The 90 days in any 180-day period limit is a single balance shared across all 30 covered countries, not a fresh count for each. Days spent in Poland before you drive north into Lithuania, and days later in Latvia or Estonia, all come out of the same allowance, and the internal Schengen borders between them are not checked. Planning a Short Stay in Lithuania

Lithuania rewards a slower route than a single city break, because the capital, the second city and the coast are each several hours apart and quite different in character.

Vilnius Airport (VNO) is the main gateway, with Kaunas (KUN) serving low-cost routes and Palanga (PLQ) opening onto the Baltic coast, busiest in summer.
The Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage site of sand dunes, pine forest and old fishing villages such as Nida and Juodkrantė, reached by ferry from Klaipėda, Lithuania's seaport.
Only the northern half of the spit is Lithuanian. The southern half lies in the Russian Kaliningrad Region, so the line partway along it is an external EU border, not something you stroll across.
Driving to Latvia or Poland crosses internal Schengen borders with no routine checks, but the same 90-day allowance keeps running throughout.
Crossings with Belarus have closed and reopened more than once. Confirm their status with the State Border Guard Service before building a route through them.
Rail Baltica runs through Panevėžys and Kaunas rather than Vilnius; the link to the capital is planned for after 2030, and the section to the Polish border is targeted earlier.

Do I need an ETIAS to visit Lithuania now?

When is ETIAS expected to start?

There is no confirmed date. The European Commission and other official EU sources still name the last quarter of 2026, but as a target rather than a fixed commitment, and the timetable has already been pushed back more than once. The EU's own traveller portal no longer prints a quarter at all and says only that ETIAS is currently not in operation, with no applications being collected. The EU has undertaken to announce the real start date several months in advance at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias.

Is ETIAS the same as the fingerprint check at Vilnius Airport?

No. That is the Entry/Exit System, which the State Border Guard Service switched on at Vilnius Airport first and then extended to the other airports, the seaport and the land crossings. EES happens at the border and replaces passport stamping with a digital record of your face, fingerprints and travel dates. ETIAS is a separate online authorisation obtained before travel. You will eventually need both.

Can I use an ETIAS to cross into Belarus or Kaliningrad?

No. ETIAS relates only to entering the 30 participating European countries. Entering Belarus or the Russian Kaliningrad Region is governed by their own rules and normally requires a visa issued by those countries. Lithuania's crossings with Belarus have also been closed and reopened more than once, and restrictions apply to vehicle transit toward Kaliningrad. Check the State Border Guard Service before planning any such route.
