ETIAS for Liechtenstein: A Country With No External Border

Liechtenstein is one of the 30 European countries that will require an ETIAS travel authorisation, and one of only four non-EU states inside the Schengen area, alongside Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. It is also the only country on the ETIAS list with no airport of its own and no external Schengen border anywhere along its frontier.

The principality covers about 160 square kilometers between Switzerland and Austria. Both neighbors are Schengen members, which means every one of Liechtenstein's borders is an internal one. There is no passport control on the road in from Buchs or Feldkirch, and no border crossing point anywhere in the country where an authorisation would be inspected. The practical consequence is the point most travelers miss: your ETIAS is checked at whichever Schengen border you cross first, commonly Zurich Airport, and not on arrival in Vaduz.

That is precisely why the authorisation still matters. If you fly into Zurich or Friedrichshafen and continue by train and bus, the check happens at that airport, before you ever see Liechtenstein. The UK government notes that Switzerland handles immigration and customs matters for Liechtenstein, a relationship underpinned by a customs union and by Liechtenstein's use of the Swiss franc. ETIAS itself is not yet in operation. The European Commission has pointed to the last quarter of 2026 for the start of operations, but that timing is not confirmed and the timetable has already changed more than once; the EU's own travel portal for visitors now says only that the system is not currently in operation.
