What Is the Iraq Tourist Visa?

The Iraq Tourist Visa is an electronic visa (eVisa) that travelers must obtain before travelling to Iraq for tourism and short visits. Launched as part of Iraq’s national e-Visa rollout and accessible through the official e-Visa portal, the Iraq Tourist Visa replaced many older, paper-based processes and consular-only routes to make short-stay travel easier for eligible nationalities.

Applicants complete the online application at evisa.iq or use DoVisa for guided completion with document checks. Typical requirements include a valid passport, a recent digital photo, and basic trip details. After approval you receive an electronic approval document — usually a printable PDF confirmation or email — which you present at check-in and on arrival. Some airlines and border points may request a printed copy.

Although the Iraq Tourist Visa eases pre-travel formalities, it remains an entry visa: final admission is decided by immigration officers at the port of entry. The Iraq Tourist Visa does not guarantee entry if you fail to meet on-arrival checks (passport validity, purpose of travel, or security checks). Since 2025 Iraq moved many nationalities to mandatory e-Visa pre-clearance, ending on-arrival issuance for those countries as part of the March 2025 policy update — check the portal for nationality-specific rules.

Key facts: typical stay is up to 30 days; passport validity is commonly 6 months from arrival. For broader rules see Iraq visa information, consult the official e-Visa portal at evisa.iq, and Apply for your Iraq Tourist Visa now when you’re ready.

Who Needs the Iraq Tourist Visa?

Who Needs It

  • Foreign nationals who plan to enter Iraq for tourism or short visits and do not hold a visa-exempt passport
  • Visitors who will clear immigration and remain in-country for sightseeing, visiting family, or leisure
  • Children and minors — a parent or guardian should apply on their behalf
  • Returnees with foreign passports who do not hold Iraqi citizenship may still need the eVisa unless otherwise exempt

Who Is Exempt

  • Iraqi nationals (including persons born in Iraq holding foreign passports — see Iraqi Embassy guidance)
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders on government business
  • Airline and vessel crew on active official duty who remain on duty
  • Transit passengers who remain airside and do not clear Iraqi immigration

Iraq Entry Requirements & Restrictions

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp — see the U.S. and UK travel advice pages for confirmation.

Itinerary, Accommodation & Funds

Be prepared to show a confirmed return or onward ticket, hotel or host details, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. Exact documentary checks are at the discretion of immigration officers.

Vaccination & Health Advice

There are no routine mandatory vaccinations for entry for most travellers; the CDC does not list compulsory vaccines for direct travel to Iraq. Check CDC Iraq advice for health guidance and recommended immunisations.

Customs & Prohibited Items

Iraqi customs prohibit importing illegal drugs, firearms/explosives/ammunition (unless authorised), and certain currencies (some sources reference restrictions on specific currencies). Import of pharmaceuticals and other controlled goods may require prior approval — consult official customs guidance.

Travel Insurance & Medical Care

Medical facilities vary by region; travel insurance with medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Treatment in remote areas may require transportation to major cities such as Baghdad or Erbil for advanced care.

Travel Tips for Iraq Visitors

Iraq is a country of deep history and regional variation — from Baghdad’s Tigris banks to the Kurdish cities in the north. Major international gateways include Baghdad International Airport (BGW), Erbil International (EBL), Basra International (BSR), Najaf International (NJF), Sulaymaniyah (ISU), and Mosul (OSM).

  • Best time to visit: October–April for milder weather and easier travel.
  • Currency: Iraqi dinar (IQD). US dollars are sometimes accepted by major hotels and tour operators but carry local currency for day-to-day purchases.
  • Language: Arabic is official nationwide; Kurdish is widely used in the Kurdistan Region. English is commonly spoken in airports, hotels and tourist services.
  • Time zone: Iraq Standard Time is GMT+3.
  • Dress and conduct: Dress modestly in public and respect local customs and religious sites.
  • Getting around: Domestic flights connect major cities; confirm local transfers in advance and allow extra time for security checks.
  • Safety: Follow government travel advisories and register with your embassy if recommended — checkpoints and security measures can affect itineraries.
  • Keep documents handy: Save a PDF of your eVisa approval and your passport details offline — some arrival points request printed confirmation.
