Q: How long will an ETIAS be valid for trips to Hungary?

Three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Within that period it allows multiple entries for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Those 90 days are counted across all participating countries together, so time spent in Austria or Croatia counts against the same allowance as time spent in Budapest. If you renew your passport, you need a new authorisation.

Where ETIAS Will Actually Be Checked in Hungary

Hungary sits inside the Schengen area, so once ETIAS starts you will use one authorisation for Hungary and the other participating European countries. What makes Hungary unusual is where its checks happen. Long-haul flights land at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. On the ground, Hungary's borders with Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia are internal Schengen borders, as is the border with Romania since 1 January 2025. The borders with Serbia and Ukraine are different: they form the European Union's external frontier, and the Hungarian Police run full document checks there.

That distinction matters for two very common trips. If you come up from Serbia by car or coach through Röszke or Tompa, or west from Ukraine at Záhony or Beregsurány, you are entering the Schengen area at that point, and an ETIAS authorisation will be checked there along with your Entry/Exit System record. The same applies at passport control in Budapest if you fly in from outside the Schengen area. But if you arrive from Vienna, Bratislava or Zagreb there is no routine border post at all, and your Schengen clock simply keeps running from wherever you first entered.

ETIAS is not in operation. The European Commission still points to the last quarter of 2026, but that is the EU's stated intention rather than a confirmed date, and the timetable has already moved more than once. The EU's own traveller portal now says only that ETIAS is not in operation, and the EU has said it will announce the start date well before launch. Nobody can obtain an ETIAS for Hungary today. What Hungarian Border Officers Will Ask For

A passport issued within the last ten years

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. A passport that is still technically valid but was issued more than ten years ago can be refused. The rules for Hungary are set out in the UK government's Hungary entry requirements guidance.

An ETIAS authorisation, once the system opens

ETIAS is an authorisation, not a visa. It will be linked electronically to the passport you apply with, valid for three years or until that passport expires, whichever comes first, and it allows multiple entries. It never guarantees entry: the Hungarian border officer still makes the decision. The only official EU information portal is travel-europe.europa.eu/etias.

Entry/Exit System registration at the border

The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 at all external border crossing points. Instead of stamping your passport, officers record your facial image, fingerprints and travel document data. In Hungary that happens at Budapest Airport and at the Serbian and Ukrainian land crossings. See the European Commission's note that the Entry/Exit System is fully operational.

Declarations when you enter from Serbia or Ukraine

Crossings from Serbia and Ukraine are EU external borders, so customs and cash-declaration rules apply in full, and goods brought in from outside the EU must be declared. Entry and exit is only permitted at designated crossing points during their opening hours. The Hungarian Police list the crossings and publish live waiting times on their border crossing pages.

Hungary uses the forint, not the euro

Hungary is an EU member state that has not adopted the euro, according to the European Union's list of countries using the euro. Everyday prices are quoted in Hungarian forint. Cards are accepted across Budapest, while market stalls, thermal bath cash desks and rural guesthouses often work in cash.

Practical Points for a Short Stay in Hungary

Hungary rewards a little planning that a generic Schengen checklist will not give you.

Your accommodation registers you, not the other way round. Hotels, guesthouses and short-term rentals in Hungary must record every guest's identity data and pass it to the police-run VIZA system. Non-Hungarian guests are asked for a passport at check-in, and the provider must refuse to accommodate you if no valid document is shown.
The currency is the forint. Hungary has not adopted the euro, so prices are quoted in forint even where a euro figure is displayed alongside. Cards are widely accepted in Budapest; smaller market stalls and rural guesthouses often are not set up for them.
Budapest splits the Danube cruise map. Itineraries are commonly divided into upper and lower Danube at Budapest. Sailing downstream towards Romania and Bulgaria takes you through Serbia, which is outside the EU and Schengen, so you exit and re-enter the Schengen area mid-cruise.
Thermal bathing is ordinary here. Budapest's bath houses are working public facilities with cash desks, locker systems and their own etiquette, rather than resort spas.
August belongs to Sziget. The festival takes over an island in the Danube in Budapest each August and pulls accommodation demand across the whole city with it.
Two land borders behave completely differently. Arriving from Austria or Slovakia involves no border post at all; arriving from Serbia or Ukraine means a full external-border check, with queues the Hungarian Police publish live.

Can I get an ETIAS for Hungary right now?

No. ETIAS is not in operation and the EU is not accepting applications from anyone. Do I need ETIAS if I arrive in Hungary from Austria or Slovakia?

Yes. Once the system starts, ETIAS is tied to entering the Schengen area, not to each country inside it. Hungary's borders with Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia are internal Schengen borders, and the border with Romania became one on 1 January 2025, so there is no routine check as you cross. You would still need a valid authorisation because you entered the Schengen area somewhere, and officers inside Hungary can ask to see your documents.

Which of Hungary's borders are EU external borders?

The crossings with Serbia and Ukraine. On the Serbian side the main road crossings are Röszke on the M5 motorway and Tompa; towards Ukraine they include Záhony and Beregsurány. Is ETIAS a visa for Hungary?

No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for people who are already visa-exempt. It does not replace a Schengen visa and it does not create a right to enter. The Hungarian border officer makes the entry decision when you arrive and can still refuse entry or ask for more evidence about your trip, your accommodation and your onward travel. If your nationality needs a visa for Hungary, you apply for a Schengen visa instead.

How long will an ETIAS be valid for trips to Hungary?

How is EES different from ETIAS at a Hungarian border?

The Entry/Exit System is the biometric register at the border itself. It has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and records your facial image, fingerprints and travel document data instead of stamping your passport. ETIAS is the authorisation you obtain online before you travel. You will need both: EES is completed by officers at Budapest Airport or at Röszke, while ETIAS happens well beforehand.

Do I have to register with the police when I stay in Hungary?

Not personally, for a short tourist stay. Hungarian law places the obligation on the accommodation provider. Hotels, guesthouses and short-term rentals must record your identity data and transmit it to the VIZA system operated for the police. In practice you will be asked for your passport at check-in, and by law the provider must refuse the service if you do not present a valid identification document.

What happens if the ETIAS launch is delayed again?
