What the DJRV Is, and What We Actually Do for You

DoVisa is an independent travel assistance service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of Guatemala's SAT, INGUAT, or any Guatemalan government agency. The Declaración Jurada Regional de Viajero is a free government form that you can complete yourself at portal.sat.gob.gt. Our fee covers the checking, filing and delivery work described below — never the declaration itself, which carries no government charge.

The Declaración Jurada Regional de Viajero (DJRV) — also called the Declaración Electrónica del Viajero, and known colloquially as the "papeleta de migración" — has been mandatory since July 2023 for air travelers entering and leaving Guatemala. It is administered by SAT, the country's tax and customs authority, in coordination with the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración. Despite the nickname, it is fundamentally a customs declaration, and it is the only pre-travel online form Guatemala asks air travelers to complete: there is no separate immigration pre-registration to worry about.

One declaration covers one direction of travel. You file before you fly in and again before you fly out, so a round trip means two filings. A single adult may include a spouse and minor children in the same declaration; every other adult files their own. The form opens three days before departure and cannot be edited once submitted, which makes first-attempt accuracy the whole game. DoVisa checks your details against the format SAT's system actually accepts — the 15-digit passport number and the separate booklet number are where most declarations go wrong — files through the official SAT channel, and delivers your QR code and declaration number by email, with a spouse and minor children included at no extra cost.

Who Needs a DJRV

Who Needs It

  • Every air traveler entering Guatemala, regardless of nationality, visa status or length of stay
  • Every air traveler leaving Guatemala — the exit declaration is a separate filing, not an afterthought
  • Guatemalan nationals and returning residents, on exactly the same terms as visitors
  • Minor children — they may be included in a parent's or guardian's declaration rather than filing their own
  • Adult children and other adults traveling together — each files a separate declaration, even within one family group
  • Transiting and short-stay passengers who clear Guatemalan customs — there is no exemption for a brief visit

Who Is Exempt

  • Land border crossings and sea arrivals are handled differently by SAT — DoVisa files DJRV declarations for air journeys only

What You'll Need to Hand

Passport Number in Full — All 15 Digits

No spaces and no hyphens. SAT states this explicitly, and a short or spaced entry is the single most common reason a declaration fails.

The Passport Booklet Number

A separate alphanumeric code printed above the barcode in your passport. It is a different field from the passport number and is not interchangeable with it.

Nationality and Residence Details

Passport country of issue, nationality and country of residence.

Flight Details for the Direction You Are Filing

Airline, flight number and date — plus your address or accommodation in Guatemala and the purpose of your trip.

An Active Email Address

The declaration number and QR code are delivered there and nowhere else — use one you can open while traveling, and check your spam folder.

Your Goods Declaration

Cash, merchandise and anything beyond normal baggage. The DJRV is a sworn customs declaration — answer honestly.

Travel Tips for Guatemala Travelers

Most international air travelers use La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, with a smaller share flying into Mundo Maya (FRS) near Tikal — the DJRV requirement is the same at both.

  • File once per direction, not once per trip: a round trip needs two declarations — one for the flight in, one for the flight out. Travelers routinely file on arrival, enjoy the holiday, and find themselves filling in a rushed form at the departure gate. Book both directions with us at the same time and the second is already handled.
  • Get the passport number and booklet number the right way round: your passport carries two numbers. SAT wants the complete 15-digit passport number typed with no spaces or hyphens, plus the booklet number — the alphanumeric code above the barcode — in its own separate field. Transposing them is the top cause of rejected declarations, and this is the specific check we run before anything is submitted.
  • Three days out is the window, and the clock is real: the declaration opens three days before your flight and is valid for three days from the moment you complete it. Filing a week ahead is not possible; two to three days before departure is the sweet spot.
  • There is no edit button — plan for that: once a DJRV is submitted, SAT provides no way to correct it. If you spot a mistake, or your flight moves to a different date, the fix is a fresh, correct declaration for that flight — carry the new QR code.
  • Save the QR offline before you leave home: the declaration number and QR arrive by email. Screenshot them or download the PDF, so airport Wi-Fi is not standing between you and the customs desk — some airlines also ask to see it at check-in.
  • Declare goods honestly: the DJRV is a customs instrument first. Cash, merchandise and gifts above the allowance belong on the form — a sworn declaration that turns out to be wrong is a customs problem, not a paperwork problem.
