Q: Where in Belgium will my ETIAS actually be checked?

Only at a designated external border crossing point. The Immigration Office lists the airports of Brussels National, Deurne, Ostend, Gosselies, Bierset and Wevelgem; the ports of Antwerp, Ostend, Zeebrugge, Ghent, Nieuwpoort and Blankenberge; and Brussels South station. If you drive or take a train in from France, the Netherlands, Germany or Luxembourg, there is no external border and no check.

Q: I am taking the Eurostar from London to Brussels. Where is my entry check?

Before you board, in London. Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom run juxtaposed controls on cross-Channel routes, so the Schengen entry check for a Eurostar service happens at St Pancras rather than on arrival at Brussels-Midi/Zuid. Traveling in the other direction, Belgian authorities check you at Brussels-Midi before UK Border Force does its own check.

Q: Do I have to register with a Belgian commune as a visitor?

Only if you stay at a private address. Non-EU visitors on a short stay must declare their presence within three working days, which since April 2026 is done through the online My Address in Belgium form rather than at the town hall. Guests in hotels, guesthouses, holiday rentals, hospitals and similar registered accommodation are not required to declare separately.

Q: Is it true that I have to carry my passport everywhere in Belgium?

Yes. Belgian rules require you to be able to prove your identity on request, and the UK Foreign Office advises travelers plainly that in Belgium you must carry your passport with you at all times. Leaving it in a hotel room is not sufficient. Keep it secure, and keep a separate copy of the photo page in case the original is lost.

Q: Does an approved ETIAS guarantee I will be let into Belgium?

No. An ETIAS is permission to travel to the border, not permission to enter. Officers of the Belgian Federal Police make the entry decision and can still ask for proof of your accommodation, your means of support, your return travel and the purpose of your visit. If those answers do not add up, entry can be refused despite a valid authorisation.

Belgium, the Schengen Core, and ETIAS

Belgium signed the original Schengen Agreement in 1985 alongside France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany, and its land borders have been internal ones ever since. That is why the country has so few places where an ETIAS will actually be inspected. The Belgian Immigration Office lists thirteen crossing points into Schengen territory through Belgium: the airports of Brussels National, Deurne, Ostend, Gosselies, Bierset and Wevelgem; the ports of Antwerp, Ostend, Zeebrugge, Ghent, Nieuwpoort and Blankenberge; and Brussels South station, home of the Eurostar terminal. Drive in from Lille, Aachen or Maastricht and you cross no external border at all.

Once the system starts, visa-exempt nationals will need an approved ETIAS before traveling. It covers short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, permits multiple entries, and lasts three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Border control in Belgium is carried out by the Federal Police, whose aviation police staff the airports and whose shipping police cover the maritime crossings. An authorisation is not a visa and is never a guarantee of admission.

Documents and Formalities for a Short Stay in Belgium

Passport rules, and carrying it with you

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before you arrive and an expiry date at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area. Belgium goes further than most: the UK Foreign Office states plainly that in Belgium you must carry your passport with you at all times, so a hotel safe is not the right place for it. An approved ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS is not yet in operation, and no applications are being collected. Once it launches, visa-exempt nationals will need an approved authorisation tied to the passport they travel on, giving multiple entries over three years or until that passport expires. It is an authorisation rather than a visa, and it does not guarantee entry. The official rules are published on the European Union's ETIAS portal and by the European Commission.

Biometric registration at the border

The Entry/Exit System records a facial image, fingerprints and every entry and exit for short-stay visitors, replacing the passport stamp. In Belgium you meet it at the thirteen designated crossing points, principally Brussels Airport and the Eurostar terminal at Brussels-Midi/Zuid. It is a separate system from ETIAS; the European Commission explains how it works.

Declaring your presence if you stay privately

If you stay at a private address rather than a hotel, Belgian rules require you to declare your presence within three working days of arriving. Since April 2026 this is done online through the My Address in Belgium form instead of in person at the municipality. Guests in hotels, guesthouses, holiday rentals and hospitals do not need to declare, as the City of Brussels sets out.

Medical cover and means of support

The Belgian Immigration Office expects short-stay visitors to hold valid travel documents, proof of accommodation, medical insurance and sufficient means for the stay and the return journey. These conditions come from Article 6 of the Schengen Borders Code and apply whether or not you needed a visa. The requirements are listed on the Immigration Office short stay page.

Getting Around Belgium as a Short-Stay Visitor

Belgium is compact enough to cross in an afternoon, which changes what arriving means: most visitors reach it from inside the Schengen area and never see a border post.

Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Mechelen form the classic city-break circuit, and Bruges in particular is busy from spring through early autumn.
The Flemish coast runs for roughly 67 kilometers from De Panne to Knokke-Heist and peaks in July and August, with Ostend working as both a resort and a commercial port.
The Westhoek around Ypres draws steady First World War remembrance travel, heaviest around anniversaries in spring and autumn.
The Carnival of Binche in Hainaut, held on the three days before Lent, is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list and fills accommodation across the province.
Beer festivals cluster in early September, with the Belgian Beer Weekend in Brussels and the Bruges Beer Festival within days of each other.
Brussels-Midi/Zuid is the country's rail crossroads and its only external border post by train, so allow extra time there if you are arriving from London.

Can I get an ETIAS for Belgium right now?

No. The system is not running and the EU is not accepting applications, so no valid ETIAS exists and no Belgian border officer can ask for one. The European Commission still points to the last quarter of 2026, but treat that as a target rather than a settled date: the timetable has slipped more than once already, and the EU's own traveler portal has stopped naming a quarter and now states only that ETIAS is not in operation.
