Namibia's Multilingual Document Heritage: German, Afrikaans, and English
Namibia's documented history spans three distinct administrative eras, each leaving a distinct linguistic imprint on the country's official records. From 1884 to 1915, Namibia (then German South West Africa / Deutsch-Südwestafrika) was a German colonial territory, and all official records — birth registrations, land titles, court judgments, and administrative correspondence — were maintained in German. This creates a unique situation: many Namibians seeking immigration visas, inheritance proceedings, or academic credential evaluations abroad may possess documents written in 19th or early 20th-century German script, including Kurrent or Sütterlin handwriting styles.
Following the South African administration period (1915–1990), Afrikaans became the dominant administrative language alongside English, and many civil registration records from the mid-20th century are written in Afrikaans. Documents such as geboorteaktes (birth certificates) and huweliksertifikate (marriage certificates) from this period require translation by professionals familiar with South African Afrikaans administrative terminology. Since independence in 1990, English has been Namibia's sole official language, but Afrikaans and German remain widely used in private and semi-official contexts.
DoVisa's translation team includes specialists in historical German documents, modern Afrikaans civil records, and English-language Namibian administrative texts. Our translators handle the full spectrum of Namibian document types, from colonial-era German land surveys to contemporary certificates issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS).

Apostille Certification for Namibian Documents: The Complete Process
As a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since January 30, 2001, Namibia offers a streamlined mechanism for certifying public documents for international use. An apostille is a standardized certificate that authenticates the origin of a public document, making it recognized in all 125+ Hague Convention member countries without further consular legalization.
In Namibia, two competent authorities are designated to issue apostilles: the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice (through the Directorate: Legal Services at the Justitia Building in Windhoek) and the Registrar of the High Court of Namibia. Applicants must submit original documents in person — postal or electronic submission is not accepted by the Namibian authorities. Processing times typically range from 7 to 15 business days depending on the authority and document volume.
The typical chain for using a Namibian document abroad is: (1) obtain a certified translation of the document, (2) have the original document apostilled by the Namibian Ministry of Justice or High Court Registrar, and (3) present both the apostilled original and the certified translation to the foreign authority. DoVisa coordinates the apostille add-on service, working with registered agents in Windhoek to facilitate submission to the Ministry of Justice on your behalf. Electronic apostilles (e-Apostille) are not currently available in Namibia — all apostilles are issued as physical paper certificates affixed to the original document.
