Martinique is simultaneously a département d'outre-mer (DOM) and a région d'outre-mer (ROM) of France — it is a full integral part of the French Republic and the European Union. French citizens born in Martinique hold the same legal status as those born in Paris or Lyon. Their civil status documents are issued under the Code civil by local mairies, and their academic credentials follow the French national education system under the authority of the Recteur de l'académie de Martinique.
The Cour d'appel de Fort-de-France is the appellate court for Martinique, maintaining the register of traducteurs assermentés (sworn translators) for the territory. For international translations — required by USCIS, the UK Home Office, IRCC, or Australian immigration — DoVisa's certified translations are the appropriate solution. The island's official administrative capital is Fort-de-France, also known as the économique and cultural center of the French Antilles.
